Your mind is cluttered with all sorts of things (home chores, work-related (long-term) projects, work-related (daily) tasks, minor and major goals, etc.) - no wonder so many get flustered and throw in the towel. Your poor mind is overloaded and just wants to shut down!
The first step is to de-clutter your mind. Write everything down except your goals (those should already be memorized). Separate your important tasks into two categories: Personal and Professional; then prioritize and write these tasks down (the night before). You should also write down your non-critical tasks and group them under a bonus category. If you have the extra bandwidth to accomplish these non-critical tasks then GREAT! If you can't get to them - don't worry about it - consider it a productive day, because you've accomplished the most important ones!
These tasks should be documented on a piece of paper NOT electronically on your computer unless you're someone who pretty much lives in front of their laptop. For daily tasks, I prefer to handwrite them on a simple and inexpensive notepad so you can easily take it everywhere and cross things off immediately upon completion. Psychologically it feels GREAT to consistently cross tasks off. You will feel inspired to accomplish more. Please do not spend your money on a fancy organizer. It's too big, bulky and expensive. There is absolutely no need for it. All you need is a simple notepad that you can take with you everywhere.
Learn to let non-crucial items drop through the cracks. If something unexpected comes up and it's not that important then drop it or write it down under the bonus category - do NOT start thinking about it. Keep your mind focused on that prioritized task list. At the end of the day when you've completed all of your important tasks - you'll feel GREAT! After breathing a sigh of relief begin writing down your tasks for the next day. Make sure you have your list completed the night before. You should hit the ground running first thing in the morning. Do this everyday of the week (yes all 7 days)! Even if all you have written down for Sunday is checking email. You're personal tasks may include: going to church, spending 2 hours playing with the kids and helping your wife clean the house. It's important to remain consistent so regardless of the tasks and day of the week, write them down and treat every day equally. Being consistent and starting each day in the same manner builds structure and will motivate you to accomplish more everyday of the year.
