Most of people do not really care about joinery or filling cabinets that they mostly use as storage. In fact, there is an indication showing that one of the most common problems on moving to a new office is the design of the joinery and storage cabinet. This is not surprising because many designers only focus on the front look and forget the function inside the office. As a result, the first day of operation in the new place becomes a chaos as there is not enough space for filing.

Here are several items that need to be checked and considered during the design stage:

• Quantity of files against office size. Quantity will show how many number of joinery to be place in the new office layout. Most clients have limited knowledge to give information on their current file quantity. It is designers' job to check and advise clients on actual area that can be fitted. Outsource storage is an alternative if the files are more than the designed space.

• Office policy in the company. Some companies have strict clean desk policy and do not allow big stuffs of files on the table. This policy will decide the storage room and joinery quantity.

• Type of files. It can be hanging files, folder, etc. In this case, the design of joinery cabinet must be follow the type of office's standard file system.

• Size of folders or boxes. Each company has specific folders or boxes for files to follow their business requirements. Each of folders or boxes may have different sizes which will need creativity from designers to design the right size of the joinery.

• Adjustable shelves are needed for flexibility inside the joinery.

• Material. The designer should choose easy maintenance materials such as laminated for the interior of the joinery. Furthermore, light color materials are preferred so it is easy to check the cleanliness of the joinery.

Hopefully if we consider the above factors, we can eliminate surprises during the first operation day and all files will be tidy in their designated place.
