Organizing Your Closet with Storage Units

T.R. Humphrey
Did you know that half of a typical closet space often goes unused? Organizing your closet the correct way can make your storage spaces more efficient. One way to organize your closet is by using storage units. Along with compartments an efficient closet space will also have shelves, drawers, hanging poles, and other organizing units.

Divide and conquer the mountain of clothes or other items by using closet compartments. Some of these compartments are built of melamine panels. Melamine panels are composite wood boards that are coated with a thin plastic film. These little compartments can help organize little things like gloves, scarves, and hats. These smaller compartments measure to only 12 inches deep. Larger compartments measure 24 inches deep and are great for storing shoes or boots.

One helpful hint for utilizing more space would be to measure the width of your closet opening. If the width of your closet opening measures less than two feet of you closet width, you may want to remove the front of your closet and re frame it. This will give you a larger opening. The dead space could be used to store valuables and you could add an inconspicuous access panel to hide your things.

If you do need more storage in your closet you can organize some units yourself. Don't fear ready to assemble furniture. They are more affordable than hiring a professional carpenter. If you have a tape measure, a level, a hammer, and a few screw drivers you can do it.

First you should know there are many types of ready to assemble units. Metal braced Topo shelves made of natural baltic birch offer style and function. You can find these at www.containerstore.com. These can be used in garages, kitchen pantries, and other extra storage places. This site has many storage options for each room in the house.

If you are organizing a kitchen pantry you might try drawers with raised panel doors. You can find these at www.closetmaid.com. This site has many storage options for the kitchen, laundry, utility room, living room, and garage. This site has a product catalog and a visual storage planner. If you don't want to install them yourself you can find a professional closet designer and installer from this site.
