In Windows, it's pretty easy. Most of us will download them into one spot on the computer, if yours aren't start putting all of them into one folder that is easily accessible, you can even use the desktop temporarily if needed by right clicking the desktop and going to new - folder. Drag all your picture folders on the computer to this new folder. Ok so when you have all your photos in one folder then you can start making new folders in this folder by right clicking and going to new then folder. Name this folder by the occasions that you want to organize by.
I have birthdays, holidays, vacations, etc. When you open each of these folders, you can even create more folders and be more specific in their names like so and so's birthday 2005, or Christmas 2000.
Keep open the folder with all of your photos and open another window with the desired end folder. All you have to do is pretty much drag and drop the photos from one window into the correct named folder. This will take some time so you can also multiple select the photos by holding down the ctrl button when you are selecting and when you drag them they will all be together.
You can also organize in each folder when you are done placing photos by the date, size, or name by right clicking and going to arrange icons by. Once you have organized all your photos be sure to back them up by burning them to some discs in case of computer problems or crashes. Better safe then sorry.
There are also some really cool programs you can use to make your pictures into little stories like the Photoshow deluxe by roadrunner. You can add music and various effects to all your pictures and then share them on the web with family and friends. There are lots of computer scrapbooking programs you can buy and use without all the mess and stuff like creating keepsakes scrapbook designer and to top it off if you want to have someone make a nice professional photo book for you, you can go to a place like picaboo.com and make a photobook online and they will print it up for you. These are also great for artist's folios.
Once your photos are organized you can then print, save, and keep up on all the pictures that you take.
