Organizing Your Home--Living Room

Make Your Living Room More Livable Using Organization

Pearl Grace
Organizing your home-whether an apartment, condo, or house-can be a daunting task. Below are some tips to organize your living room.

1-Decide how you plan to use your living room. Will you be relaxing, watching TV and reading there? Or just listening to music with no television present? Your goals for the room will determine how you will organize it.

2-De-clutter the room. Look around. Does it have unused objects and furniture? If so, place them in another room, sell them in a yard sale, give them to a charity, or dispose of them. After all, you want to have the space to utilize the living room as you desire.

Speaking of disposing of belongings, don't be afraid to get rid of items you no longer use. Organizing involves cleaning and doing away with old, unused items. Reducing clutter is a necessary step to creating a comfortable, organized living room.

3-Group objects for ease of location and use. Select a nice basket or wooden lidded box for the side table beside your favorite chair/sofa spot. Fill it with all the little things you need when you relax in your living room.

For example, if you like to read in your living room, place reading glasses, bookmarker, highlighter, and pencil in the box. Those who journal may want to keep journals and favorite pens there. Other handy items for your basket/box are magnifying glass, stapler/extra staples, address book, calculator, and blank notepads for impromptu store or errand lists.

4-Reserve spaces in the living room for cherished knick-knacks. If you collect bells, place a grouping of 7 or 8 on your coffee table. If you carve wood, place carved items in the room. When placing items, think "grouped together" and "pleasing to the eye."

5-Have attractive furniture pieces with much-needed storage for books, magazines, CDs, videos, and other items you use in your living room. Sort items into bins or onto shelves to keep them organized and easy to find.

6-Place art pieces/pictures judiciously. Some designers recommend placing no more than 2 or 3 items per wall as the eyes need to "rest." An organized living room looks neat, open, and uncluttered. Rotate pictures from season to season to view different art throughout the year, rather than squeezing them all on the wall together.

7-Walk through the living room each evening to gather items and put them back where they go. Once you get organized, it's important to stay organized.

Embracing these suggestions will aid in creating an organized living room. Organizing your home is a cleansing, energizing experience that leads to wonderful, relaxing times in your own space: your home.
