Organizing a Move

Preparing to Relocate

Lisa Mason
Relocating your family is not an easy task, especially if you have children. No matter how big or small your move or how far away you are going, there is always a lot to do. It is also an emotional and a financial strain on the entire family because moving costs money and time and it can be very stressful. Here are some simple tips to help you prepare for your next move.

Plan ahead - As much as possible you need to plan ahead. Begin saving for a move several months in advance. If you do not already have a place to move to, you should start searching for a house several months in advance as well. This makes it much easier to find what you need in your budget range.

Utilities- Plan for your utilities ahead of time. Find out what company you have, what deposits you may have to pay and what dates you can get services turned on. Remember that in many places, it is not instant and you do not want to arrive at the new home before your utilities are on.

Don't forget the mail- You can pick up a change of address form from your local post office and all you have to do is drop it any a mailbox anywhere and put in your change of address. Your mail will be forwarded from your old address for up to 1 year at your new address. Remember to change your addresses with magazine subscriptions and other sources.

Don't buy boxes- There is no need to waste a lot of money on purchasing boxes if you are moving yourself. There are many great places where you can get boxes for free. Try your local stores and grocery centers and simply ask them if you can have their old boxes.

Remember your children- If you have children, keep their needs in mind. Whenever possible, try not to move them in the middle of a school year. Remember that their friends and peers are important to them and help them make arrangements to keep in touch. If you can, let them have a sleepover or "going away" party.

Keep "emergency" items- When packing, remember to keep those important or emergency items that you often need on a daily basis. Toothbrushes, clothing, a small first aid kit, tools such as hammer and screwdrivers and other items will be needed before all of your other boxes are unpacked so keep them handy. There is of course much more that goes into planning a move than just what I've talked about here but these are some tips to help you. The more time you have to plan and prepare, the better your move will usually be but remember that you can't plan everything and unexpected things will occur. Try to be prepared for this and not become too stressed out.

If possible, plan for a celebration after you have completed your move, even if it is just a small one. Allow the kids to have a party or go to a friend's house and allow yourself and your spouse time to relax after the move. Even if you did not physically move everything yourself, but hired movers to do it, you still have the emotional stress of the move and it is a good idea to unwind before you begin to get back into the daily routine.

I hate moving. It's the packing/unpacking that sucks so much. I still have some stuff in boxes from when I moved over 2 years ago!

Great tips. I hope I never have to move, especially once those kids come. I don't think I could survive.
