Organizing Tips for Crocheters and Knitters

Ideas for Orderly Arrangement of Supplies

A distinctive quality of knitters and crocheters who stay committed to their craft is organization. Without organization, the accumulation of knitting and crochet supplies become clutter, which inhibits progress. I have found that when I organized my patterns, skeins of yarn, knitting needles, and crochet hooks in a neat and accessible manner as opposed to having them scattered and buried in numerous notebooks, containers, and bags, I have been motivated to accomplish more. Of most importance, the ability to achieve your professional craft goals requires organization; so I have listed the following tips to help you to organize your knitting and crochet supplies.

Organize Patterns in a Portfolio

Organized knitters and crocheters create portfolios for their patterns by using large scrapbooks or photo albums with protective sheets to maintain the quality of the paper and divider tabs to label various categories such as the pattern's skill level or item type. These portfolios are ideal for grouping patterns that are included on the paper wrappers of yarn skeins and pattern printouts from the Internet. Then, a great digital option to organize numerous patterns that are saved on your computer is to sort them in file folders such as by creating separate folders for scarf patterns, bag patterns, hat patterns, etc.

Organize Yarn in Baskets, Crates, Cart Drawers, Extra Dressers, Shelves with Dividers, Clear Zipper Bags or Shallow Plastic Containers with Lids

Just as shoppers expect to find yarn arranged orderly in a specific section of a craft store, knitters and crocheters must lay out their yarn in a systematic manner. Examples of organized arrangements include grouping yarn in baskets, stacked crates, drawers, shelves with dividers, clear zipper bags or shallow plastic containers with lids based on the yarns' textures, name brands, or colors. These unified systems of storage are more convenient than the shelves of closets where yarn becomes untidy and invisible, deep bins that involve digging for the buried yarn, or any scattered storage locations.

Organize Crochet Hooks, Knitting Needles, and Stitch Holders in Plastic Cases or Makeup Bags

While crochet hooks may be purchased individually with their sizes imprinted on them, double pointed knitting needles are purchased in sets where the needles themselves are unmarked with the sizes. For this reason, unorganized knitters can become confused about whether they need to buy certain sized needles for a pattern or if they already have them. It is first helpful to place label tape around a set of knitting needles to mark their sizes so that you can discard the original paper container. Then, knitting needles and crochet hooks may be arranged in makeup bags or plastic cases. Plastic cases range from small sliding pencil cases with snaps to larger plastic, sectioned cases with dimensions such as 8 ½ in. wide x 3 in. thick x 12 in. long that have the latches of lunch boxes. Label tape can be placed inside sectioned cases to mark the sizes of double pointed needles.

With these supply organizational tips in mind, knitters and crocheters are putting their actions in line with productive expectations. Organization will enable speed and joy when crocheting and knitting, providing the utmost fulfillment.
