Orgran is an Australian company that produces a wide range of gluten free products including cookies and crackers. I have tried many of their other products and have found them lacking in either taste or texture and so was unsure about experimenting with the Orgran gluten free falafel mix. However, I'd been craving falafel since my celiac disease diagnosis two years ago, and figured it was worth the risk. How bad could it be?
Orgran gluten free falafel mix was as easy to make as other falafel mixes I remember. You just add water, stir and let the falafel mixture sit until it thickens. Then you fry or bake small patties of the mixture. My gluten free falafel, which I chose to bake, was ready in about twenty minutes and was plenty for at least two meals.
My partner, who declared her hatred of falafel as I was cooking it said it smelled good and wanted to try it. I often use her to taste test gluten free foods to get a comparison to the regular versions that contain wheat, so I told her she was welcome to try it. She immediately did and declared it excellent.
She was right. Orgran gluten free falafel is great. It has the right texture and taste, but is spicier than I remember regular falafel being. That might not be a plus for some consumers, but I think most people who enjoy their falafel with onions or a little bit of hot sauce will be very happy with this taste.
Each box of Orgran gluten free falafel contains 700 calories. While Orgran says this is enough for 5 servings, I would say that three is probably more accurate. Orgran gluten free falafel is entirely fat free if you choose to bake it rather than fry it and can be a healthy high fiber, high protein snack of meal. While I've yet to be swayed by any other Orgran products, I have become a regular purchaser of their gluten free falafel mix which retails for under $5 and is available at many health food stores.
