Origin of Life- a Mestern View

babu gautam
We are here either by some design that can be divine or material (universal) or just by default, an outcome of series of random incidents. In the first case, life was not possible if the supreme power, the Creator, had not ordered this universe for reasons known only to that or the Universe as a creator of life for some reasons had not gone on the line of evolution which was destined to reach the point of 'life'. Leaving creationism out of our purview, we are still left with one neo-creationist view that universe had possibility of life in it and was so set on the line of evolution by an' engrained law' that kept it going in the direction to explore that possibility. There may not be anything divine about it but just predestined by the 'science of universe' that 'whatever is possible here must happen'. When it is not a matter of right or wrong, the affected party not being in picture, Murphy's law can be better said-whatever can happen will happen!

However to begin with lets assume first that we are here incidentally since the scientific opinion is more in favor of this. Universe was not planned, to begin with. It happened without a universal plan in place. A never-beginning and never-ending universe can probably not be an incidental universe. The causal factor or power, itself also eternal, comes into play having its abode outside the limits of universe, unaffected by the laws or happenings of the universe. We cannot ignore here the possibility of the universe and its creator being one and the same. The universe may be the superpower that created itself, better known in Indian scriptures as Purush and the manifested nature of that Purush
seen as the observable universe as Prakriti. This philosophical viewpoint can anyhow be treated more scientifically in our aforesaid assumption that 'the universe has a law engrained in it'. An inbuilt law, without applying Occam's razor, avoids the clichéd chicken and egg story. Unlike an infinite universe, a finitely infinite universe (ad absurdum for a layman) can have an unplanned or its own beginning. A universe that would have phases of beginning or end, a rhythmically expanding and contracting one, a breathing universe, can also be an incidental universe. It has to be then seen as a manifestable universe happening from an unmanifested universe. Lastly, it can also be a universe with a beginning with a big bang as commonly believed or with something similar to that; the universe that had beginning and will have an end as well, with a little scope to guess about its rehappenning.
I have just recounted the possible thoughts on theories of origin of universe, as our understanding of the universe shall remain privy to the origin of life. It was the cause or law of the universe that lead to the origin of life by extension.
Whatever may be the case; the universe is not 'governed' by a set of scientific laws or by a theory of everything, which can override the universe. Any theory or scientific law that exists in the universe was also born with the universe and evolved with the evolving universe. It is not a predetermined law that made things happen as those have happened and are happening still. In a retrospective analysis, we find a cause preceding every event and see a governing law behind every thing. In a continuous universe (a continuum) it is a fabric of cause and effect and cause is not self-born. For example, if bodies fall because of gravity then gravity is there because bodies have mass. We can remember and learn in the direction opposite to the flow of time. In reverse direction, we could never know, as every event would have preceded its cause. What we see as a governing law now would have been then a happening law governed by events.
In fact science is nothing but finding a method in a madness, a plan in an unplanned universe. We have got a lot till now and not got a bit which is perhaps a lot more still. Universe we know is the universe discovered by our intelligence, a universe of intelligent mind. This universe according to our first assumption, had no plan to create intelligent life. Nor it had its own intelligence of such 'mind' ever, to come in existence and say, 'Lo! This is the universe, and I know It.'Universe had no such plan to get acknowledged or recognized. It could remain as a universe without a mind knowing it or it being seen as universe.
Universe in first case is, an unintended interplay of mass and energy in a field we call space-time .It could have gone any way, happening itself and destroying itself that is happening again and again, non -stop .The interplay of mass and energy accidentally gave birth to life, the primordial life. With the evolution , that primordial life turned into intelligent life. It was not so simple. It is easier said than understood and explained.

The basic meaning of life is self-movement and respiration. In other words a mass body capable of taking energy from its surroundings and converting that into mass and thus capable to grow and move is a living being. Senses came much later. The initial stage of life was living without a feeling of living. Something between the living and non-living. Life was more physical and chemical than biological. It was nevertheless a complicated combination of mass and energy where the internal energy of a mass body could make the body move without an external force. Must have been a turning point; the point of birth of life.

But the point arises as to what was that relationship between mass and energy that could make it happen? The two have been interacting with each other making various lifeless combinations of molecules. But what was this 'living molecule' and how it happened?
Let us examine the characteristics of mass and energy, once again; with a different mindset to fathom their relationship, which after billions of year one day produced a compound that was life. In this relationship of mass and energy the cause of our existence lies, hidden.
Energy is movement,a movement of its own. A photon of light is one form of energy and the power, which lifts a stone, is another form of energy. In any of its forms energy doesn't occupy space. It has only one and two dimensions as explained in dimensional perspective of Mest Theory, unlike three-dimensional matter that has mass and occupies space. Energy interacts at every atomic junction with matter. Matter has no direct interactive relationship with matter, except the unexplained and hence tentatively excepted case of gravity. Mest theory, for its mystical origin and its unexplained cause, doesn't accept gravity. The reason of it being there can't justify its existence as an all-pervading attractive force. We may find it missing one day from our books and its absence will cause no disruption in planetary and galactic motions.
Energy for its own motion doesn't have to spend itself. That means energy is motion in itself. It has to spend itself for putting mass bodies into motion. I have used the term 'spend' to underline that it changes hands, but remains conserved in one form or the other.
There was matter (mass) and there was energy in fact two aspects of one thing I call mest and there was an interplay- a cosmic and atomic dance of the two. I am tempted to elaborate the mest concept of mass and matter here since there has been immense confusion in general and scientific usage of these two terms. Mass and energy put together make matter and matter along with its position and momentum in space-time is the mest, a neologism. In mest theory there is no separate and independent space-time.

Everything in this universe can be explained, if not yet explained, by our knowledge of physics and chemistry except life. What made matter to create its own energy to be cycled back into it and keep going. That is simply the mechanism of life and further as to what made that combination of energy and matter to know as to what was happening to it, still more important. When matter/energy got feeling, came the second important point in the evolution of life. Lets us first deal with the question of that life which had no feelings or least of feelings, the life as an organic compound, which could respire and make itself move.
The complex organic compound with its complex molecular bonding, with the contraption of energy amidst its heavy atomic nuclei created a system that could work as an energy machine. It was a microcosm, a replica of universe, a small confined interplay of mass energy. Energy will make the matter move and the movement of matter will release energy. Matter will consume matter to create energy and vice versa. That only universe can do, no other non-living entity of matter can consume matter and squeeze energy out of it. The ' lively' introduction of mass and energy after long really long time of their lifeless interactions!
Energy, once released, has in its nature the urge to be recognized by mass. A chargeless particle such as neutron is pure mass compared to a massless unit of energy as photon. It is a photon, on move, searching for a particle to interact with and not otherwise since a particle can't move without application of force.
Mountains, desserts and oceans on this earth were consuming light for eons and the simple result was heat, a thermodynamic event. It was only after an organic compound came that would consume light energy and with the water and other minerals and chlorophyll , will prepare its meal. That would mean being one's own creator,if not god, to some extent. The first 'intended' move by a chemical and lifeless compound. It was the origin of a survival instinct, a manufacturing and replicating process. It will be wrong to single out any such event as a point of origin of life as perhaps life could be possible without chlorophyll. Many such small but big events would have happened where the interplay of mass and energy set the ball rolling for the birth of life. The point is that the mass got ready to feel energy and energy got mass ready to recognize. Mass was awakened out of inertia to make a move by generating energy on its own. The wait for external force ended though energy in one form or the other was needed to convert it into another form. It was movement, changing one form of energy into another form willfully. This was origin of will in a chemical compound. It was the marriage of mass and energy and not just a physical or a chemical reaction. Energy has now will and the matter its support, the basis, the body. A neutron was still a neutron and photon a photon. But a particle was now a body and energy waves its will. It was oneness of a duality. The universe was same. The seed had grown into a tree, which bore fruits and again produced seeds. Will was born but sense was yet to come. Though only a qualitative advancement and still there was a long way to go. Energy was still at work and matter receptive. In the cosmic dance, it was just a baby step.Cosmos had many bands (frequencies and wavelengths) of energy interplaying with mass, the simply one.

However, this is just about to only explain the mechanical aspect of life, more precisely the movement and respiration aspect of life. Life really is much more than that. Life is much more than effect rains cause on mountains and desserts or a dead body getting rigor mortif. Life is to know of being alive. Life is all about feelings and emotions. From where those senses crept into the basic mechanical life that was till this stage just an entrapment of energy in the matter, is the question asking for answer.
Universe had the potential in it to create that intelligent life. I don't think that this piece of truth can be denied or negated by any law of physical science. Life was there in the universe like a human being in a sperm and ovum or to be more precise carbon element permutationally in the electrons, protons and neutrons of early elements of hydrogen and helium .The universe knew or not such a permutational possibility hidden in it may still be debatable. It has taken universe to discover billion of years that it had the germ of life hidden in it. At a right combination of events life one day came out.
Till the birth of senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste life can be, with a very little gap of inexplicable patch of gray, explained. The life that knew about itself and about the universe it was in, is the real question we are dealing here.
Lets begin with eyes, the organs of sight. Eyes see everything observable in the universe through a medium of energy called light. What light has to do with life that such a strong relationship came up between the two with flow of evolution. Apart from its remaining role in originating life, one thing is sure that living beings would have had never the sense of sight, but for light. If that is the case then as to who wanted the plants and animal those had been intaking light energy to survive should know the role of light in their survival. It was the light or its generator the universe or the mind and its possessor the life.
In case, life was there in this universe(as a possibility) then it must be the life who wanted to appreciate its one of the creators. If not, and the universe stumbled on life then it must be the universe that wanted life to know its creator. But either way, it was light that triggered the sense of sight in living beings. Similarly the sound energy in the universe prompted the sense of hearing in the leaving beings. Sense of smell and the sense of taste were the luxuries of life and those came much later as were not elementary for life to survive. The two important organs, the nose and the mouth were primarily for respiration and nutrition.
The sense of touching was in fact the rudimentary and the most important sense life would develop the moment it started breathing. Touch was essential for directed movement. It was essential to interact with the surroundings, the earth, water and air.
Even plants had it, though not developed. It was the combination of the senses that will lend other aspects, the intelligent life acquired. The sense of sight combined with the sense of touch gave the idea of dimensions and distances. It was no stopping there on.
But wait, the life needed a much important organ to command those senses and that was the brain or its 'sensing software' called mind. The five senses, which had originating relationship with the universe, had culminating relation with mind. What light was to universe, sight became for mind.At least a baisc mind has to have its origin with the first sense organ or it will make no sense. Mind and touch were, thus, first to arrive as will and body, the live form of energy and mass.
We should leave the luxurious senses aside as those were not fundamentally required for the survival of life. Those are yet not well developed in some not so refined people like me.
We will cut to the scene when life had no eyes and ears. It had of course sense of touch as in the plants, protozoa and other lower class of animals and just as much of mind as a living cell has in its nucleus to direct its activities. Light must be touching them and causing sensation through their organs of touch that would be skin. If one category of life was to consume more light energy and reflect less in order to use it for making food the other one will reflect more(read interact more). One that was having more of mass(body) dominating the energy(will) was set to develop as plants. This was the point of dichotomy from where one line of evolution will not head towards intelligent life ,. The primordial life compound that had energy(will) dominating mass(body) was reflective and hence, wanting to interact with its surroundings, the universe. That was set to become the intelligent life with brain and mind.
The underdeveloped sensory/neuron system was always wanting to know this agent of irritation and warmth, the light. This was the stage, life carved to know these rays of specific range of wavelength causes change of temperature around their sense of touch. Life had by now touched its surroundings, but was blind to those. Light was pricking it to open eyes and see. Out of the whole spectrum of rays it was only a band of particular wavelength, now known, as visible light only more aggressively interacting with life.
It may seem to be a hidden agenda of universe in relation to life.It was more likely the wily life compound, energized and charged craving to interact with the surroundings to know them. The released energy was reaching out to mingle with more and more matter.
A reflective lense like tissue so developed will receive and throw the light back. The energy so received will become will and the reflection of that will be the sight. That shall penetrate through the medium (light) , but could eventually see whatever hindered that penetration. The life would have now eye, the organ of sight. Then it would see the object was actually the hinderance in the way of its refection and interaction. The will of life was seeing the matter of the universe much similar to a photon of light thrown on a particle.
The light and light, life saw around was merely a fraction of the universe. To the life and its eyes, the visible and observable universe is almost everything. A particular band of energy was simultaneously hitting the sense of touch, saying-'Hear, the sound of the energy around you, o' life'. It might have taken millions of years in that foreplay till one day when life got ears.
Here comes the question as to it was the universe giving to life or life was taking it from universe, the sense of touch, sight, hearing and so on.Has universe given everything, as organs of sense and experience to life or life has taken everything it needed? Or it has just bestowed life whatever was needed for life? Is there something beyond than our senses can experience in this universe?
To get answers of these question we have settle first on one point - Is life the taker or the universe giver?
As argued above that it was the will wanting to interact and know the matter . The energy (will) of the universe activated the mass/matter and brought it to life by imparting it the will and in turn the will of life by its reflection now knows the matter of the universe. The universe so observed by us is what we have got and found by our will.

To get the answer of this we must go back to our first question. Did life come with a design or happened just by default? Our answer seems to be hidden there. If life was just incidental as science has affirmed it then there is no reason or logic that universe will give it whatever it needed to survive. Life will only get in that case what ever it needed and worked successfully to achieve. In that case, there are certainly many more things what life need not have for its survival and ought not know even for its knowledge.
It doesn't augur well for the theoretical sciences. There seems to be then lot more that is not observable by human senses and not knowable by mind.
Lets now come to the second option. We are here by some design, by some plan universe had in built in itself. While talking of a design I don't intend to intrude in a divine territory. I just want to take point home that universe had in it a capability to get manifested. To make simpler, it is to say though life strived to have eyes and ears but it was the light and sound waves that caused eyes and ears respectively. Not that life wanted to evolve and it acquired. Universe could very well deny life the all or any of them as it has denied something what we don't even know. We feel quite complete without those sense or other organs. We would have felt equally so without one of the present ones or by a replacement even.
Universal matter and energy had a latent potential to be developed into life. Life was always there unborn in the universe.
Going by this argument, universe has created life, the intelligent life that has organs of sense and a mind. Through that mind we might be just seeing the reflection of universe, a part of it or a different version of it than it actually is. There is little chance that we are seeing the universe as the universe is. In spite of that, there is definitely a correlation between the real universe and the universe we know. Our laws of science when multiplied with a coefficient will be true in that universe and that is the reason those are holding good in this partly known or reflection universe. In a mirror, the image is virtual but the distance is real and correct.

I believe if we dont know or at least not attempt know our place in this universe than we are a lost soul without a cause. We have got just one chance to tour this universe and should make best out of it. F...  View profile
