Original Artist's a Thing of the Past?

Mrs. Renee

Music is art, and allows a person to express themselves in a creative an original way, right? Well, unfortunately in today's music world this certainly does not seem to be the case. Who is the recent copycat in the news? Once again it is Beyonce who is making headlines for not being original with her new music video. Are we surprised? Not really, since copying the work of another individual just seems to be the trend. Of course there is nothing wrong with paying tribute to someone else's work, but to not give credit to the original artist, and to lead an entirely new generation of young kids to believe you came up with the idea is just wrong. If you are going to pay tribute to someone else work, make it known. First by getting their permission to do so, and then perhaps showing a few clips of the original video, so that others can see how you have added it bit of your own personality to the original concept.

So what is the next generation of children actually learning? Not creativity that's for sure. What happened to the days of writing your own song, based on personal life experience, and then adding the video to match? Well, not to worry there are still many artist who have their own original songs and videos to go along with it. Take the artist Adele for example who clearly has a love of music and makes it known who the artists are that she admires. Her first album was based on her own personal experience. Of course this does not mean that she did not have help, but that the ideas were original. Something that you can certainly hear just by listening to her music. I am sure that there are plenty of artists, who have the talent and creativity to make their own music, but this is sometimes hindered by the music company they belong too, and how long they have been in the business. However, when it comes to artist like Beyonce I must say that many expect a lot more originality.

One thing that is a little different with the artists today, when compared with artists in the past is that they have a lot more projects to worry about. For example making videos was not as complicated as it is today, and artists have clothing lines, perfume lines, and a large variety of other projects that they are working on, while working on their album. Sometimes having your hand in too many pots, can cause your work to suffer. Perhaps if more artists put all projects on hold, and focused just on their music for an entire year we would see a lot more original work, and creativity.
