Original 'Star Trek' Leonard 'Spock' Nimoy Stars in Bruno Mars Music Video

Spock is Lazy

"Pure Energy." Before starring in a Bruno Mars music video, this phrase was Leonard Nimoy's only contribution to a hip pop song. Way back in 1988, music group Information Society, sampled Spock's dialog from the original 1960's TV show. Now, the 80 year old originator of Spock from classic Star Trek takes active part in another music video. He's taken a crazy, comic cue from his old cast mate, William Shatner - Captain Kirk himself. Nimoy shambles around his home and streets - in bathrobe no less - pushing neighbors around, shopping for pornography, scaring kids and doing things best left seen, than graphically described here.

UGO reports that Nimoy has taken himself out of retirement - yet again - for this raunchy romp, entitled The Lazy Song.

Despite the randy silliness of the piece, there's something familiar about it '" at least in tone. But of course, it's simple to realize why. This sort of naughty behavior has been seen before with an old Star Trek actor, well kinda, sorta. William Shatner '" for a long time now '" has acted sci-fi's 'bad boy.' Shatner won Emmy Awards as the incorrigible Denny Crane on Boston Legal, he's done so many PriceLine TV ads, that many know him only as a pitchman from that, and most recently, he starred in "$h*! My Dad Says" - playing the epitome of a weird, rude, grumpy old guy.

Then of course there's George Takei '" Mr. Sulu '" who's not only reinvented himself by joining up with Howard Stern as Stern's official announcer and voice over artist, but by pitching television sets and other stuff - ala Shatner's pitchman chic. Takei hasn't taken on the 'grumpy old man' being randy, raunchy and rude route - at least so far.

Star Trek fans may get a rude awakening watching the Bruno Mars music video. Leonard Nimoy probably had a grand old time making the short film - and there's certainly fun to be had there - but the acerbic tone and persona was carved out long ago by Mr. Shatner. As Spock would say, acting that human, that weak - or plain old biting off the schtick of another - well, just isn't very logical.
