Orka Silicone Egg Cooker Set: Not Necessary

Donna Noble
I am addicted to those shop-at-home channels. Nine times out of ten I don't buy the stuff because I can't afford it, but it's fun to watch. Occasionally I see items that make me wonder, "What the heck were they thinking?" A recent trip through the QVC web site found me staring at my computer in awe wondering if anyone would actually purchase this product. The product was called the Orka Silicone Egg Cooker Set with Egg Timer.

That's right folks; this silly looking device was made to make sure that when you hard boil your eggs they don't hit together and fall apart while they are cooking. Made from all silicone this egg cooker looks like an egg torture device. There is a long stem that shoots out of the middle of the housing. The top of this stem hold an egg timer in the shape of an egg. 4 petals (and I use the term lightly) are positioned at the bottom of the Orka Silicone Egg Cooker Set with Egg Time. Each petal has a silicone bowl where your egg is cooked. This allows you to cook four eggs at one time and not worry about the eggs being broken in the boiling water.

What if you don't want hard boiled eggs? Well luckily for you the makers of this product made it multi tasking as there are two removable egg poaching baskets that can be used in place of the bowls for hard boiling. These egg poaching baskets seem to look like they have antenna coming out of the top. When you want to cook your eggs simply place the egg in the holder and drop them gently down into a pot of boiling water.

Looking at this product I actually laughed out loud. It looks more like a toy to give a toddler than something I would cook with. Is it really that difficult to cook the perfect hard boiled egg? Do you really need another gadget taking up counter and drawer space in your kitchen? Is this product worth the 19.83 it costs? For me, absolutely not. I can't imagine anyone actually buying this silly looking egg cooker, except for maybe a conversation piece.

Cooking hard boiled eggs is not that difficult. So what if an egg occasionally breaks while you are trying to hard boil it? Does that mean you have to go buy a special product to avoid this occasional annoyance? And really, if you are making something that requires hard boiled eggs doesn't it usually take more than 4 anyway?

If you want to find out more about this product or see a demonstration you can do so at www.qvc.com.

I'm a firm believer in Mutli-taskers...plus I just don't have room for it with all my other 500000001 gadgets.

I had to laugh when I read your essay. I bought the Orka Egg Cooker in a high-end kitchen specialty shop. Why? Well, I had to ask my husband that question, as he knows me better than I know myself. "You love gadgets," he reminded me, "Just like your dad." It's true. I also recently acquired one of those amazing potato peelers you see in the infomercials. Can't say I'm a bit sorry either. It is truly amazing. The Orka? Listen, I used to have a wonderful Paul Revereware egg poacher, which my son now keeps in his kitchen. I've tried several others, the Orka being the latest, and none have compared. The Orka does make perfect boiled eggs, however. Luckily there are just two of us at home.
