Orlando: More Than Just Mickey

Orlando is Town with More Than Enough to Do that Doesn't Involve Disney

Michael Cahill
I submit to you that Orlando, Florida is more than just The Mouse. Certainly it can never be said that Orlando would exist and be quite as thriving had it not even incorporated the wonderful world of Disney. Mickey has been completely singular in making Orlando one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, but I'd like to speak to you on a lowly travel level and let you know that the city is more than its mouse ears.

For those of you who will be vacationing in sunny Orlando, Florida this summer, you'll inevitably be drawn to the sights and sounds of one of the many Disney theme parks. Magic Kingdom, MGM, and Epcot are all very fun and entertaining places to hang out. But you can spend a fabulous day in Orlando and never see the inside of "The Happiest Place On Earth." So here is my take on how to spend a perfect day in Orlando Florida, Disney Free. As a matter of fact, I'll show you how to spend an amazingly fun day in Orlando and spend 90% of it on the same street.

In the morning I might start off with a nice walk down I-Drive. International Drive is host to a wide array of gift shops and restaurants, you'd be more than able to get breakfast there.

I'd make it my plans to spend the rest of the day at Wet N' Wild Water Park. Certainly Disney has its own water parks but at almost 30 dollars more per ticket. At Wet N' Wild. A Single day pass is 36.95 while a children's pass is 30.95. If hanging at a water park really appeals to you then you can get a Length of Stay Pass that allows you to have unlimited access to the park for 14 days and will only set you back 49.99.

The park features 6 thrill rides and 7 multi person rides. And of course they do offer 3 "Take It Easy" attractions for those just looking to lounge. This is a great place for all ages, whether you've got little kids or it's just you and a few friends looking for a little water fun.

After my day at the water park I'd head down the street to Tony Roma's. Best known for its world famous ribs, Tony Roma's has a pleasant atmosphere and a really nice wait staff. Their portions are sizable and have excellent desserts. The meal(for a couple) will probably run you about $60. It's not the cheapest meal you'll ever eat but it's excellently prepared and they'll give you enough that you can definitely eat leftovers the next day.

And since you'll already be out, you might wanna cap the night off with a trip over to Universal Studios to enjoy their City Walk attraction. City Walk is conveniently located on the Universal property and is an entire section devoted exclusively to nightlife. With over a dozen bars and nightclubs to choose from, there is sure to be one that has an atmosphere you'll enjoy. Most of the clubs don't charge a cover but be prepared for the ones that do.

So I think if you follow this plan you'll have a wonderful (and exhausting) day. If you thought that it might be a little out of your price range, don't worry, next time I'll show you how to have fun for a whole lot less. So get down to Orlando and take a minute to look past the mouse ears, you'll see the rest of the city ready and waiting to show you a good time.
