Orlando Shooting Rampage Occurs Within a Day of Fort Hood Killings

Suspect Jason Rodriguez Taken into Custody, Situation Still Unfolding

Jan Corn
Only a day after a shooting rampage in Fort Hood, Texas left 13 people dead, another shooting tragedy is unfolding in Orlando. Suspect Jason Rodriguez allegedly walked into the Gateway Center Office Building, located in Gateway Plaza, shortly after 11 am this morning and began shooting soon afterward.

Until his apprehension, the public was requested to help track down the suspect.

Suspect, Jason Rodriguez, was Former Worker at Local Orlando Business

Jason Rodriguez was driving a silver Nissan SUV, with a license tag of D119UX. Live updates can be seen at WFTV ,located here . At this point, the vehicle has allegedly been found at the Hollowbrook Apartment Complex. Six people have been wounded and several needed surgery. One person may be dead while others are in surgery or getting other medical treatment. The full number of shooting victims is not yet known and the area is still being searched.

Breaking Details about the Suspect and Shooting

While the motivation for the shooting is not known at this time, Jason Rodriguez's mother was interviewed as soon as possible. Because Rodriguez had worked at a nearby business, some people at the scene recognized Rodriguez.

At least one victim was shot in the back. The suspect, Jason Rodriguez, is a former employee of Reynolds, Smith and Hill. Residents and others at HollowBrook apartments on Curry Ford Road had reportedly heard a single gunshot, indicating a possible suicide. But that assumption was cleared when Rodriguez was found.

Jason Rodriguez has reportedly been taken from the Hollowbrook Apartments and he was taken into custody. He was arrested. The police are taking him to jail.

Orlando Shooting Happens Within One Day of Fort Hood Shooting Rampage

Only a day ago, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at a Texas Army Post and left 13 people dead, while injuring 30 others. Although there is no evidence that the Orlando shootings are connected in any way to the Fort Hood shootings, people Twittering about both tragedies were quick to express shock that another shooting, this time in Orlando, happened so soon after the Fort Hood case

The Fort Hood case was the worst mass killing on U.S. military base. Hasan had pursued a career in psychiatry but had gone through some emotional challenges and required extra counseling.

Orlando Shooting Details Still Unfolding

At this point, nearby schools are on lock down and roads and highways in the area are being kept clear (although reports are coming in that I-74 is open). Reactions from those on Twitter and other online sites reveal anger and fear about mass shootings being on the rise, even though this appears to be no more than a coincidence.

What's really sad is that we so many nut cases who want to disarm the populace so that only criminals, lunatics and terrorists will have guns.

Thanks for covering this story. It is sad that most good citizens in this country are not armed. These stories turn out very differently when there is an armed civilian who can respond at such a moment of crisis, to protect his life and end a senseless massacre.

Excellent coverage of the tragic Orlando shooting spree. One has to wonder if Rodriguez was influenced by the Fort Hood shootings. It could have pushed him over whatever edge he was on.
