Ornaments for Kids to Make

Pearlygates
Here are some different ideas for kids to make ornaments for the Christmas tree. I have included what materials and craft supplies that will be needed for each project, and detailed instructions.

SNOWMAN ORNAMENT

3" Styrofoam ball
2- Small blue buttons
A small child's sock for hat (not white)
5- Whole cloves
1" piece of stick or dowel
Yarn or string for ornament hanger
Orange paint
Glue (Tacky glue works good for this project)

Take the 1" piece of stick and paint at least half of it orange for the snowman's nose. Let dry. Glue on the 2 small blue buttons for the snowman's eyes. Take the orange stick nose and put it in to the Styrofoam ball under the eyes, until only the orange of the stick is showing. Take the 5 cloves and press and glue in place for the mouth of the snowman.

Next take the sock and cut off about 4"of the toe of the sock. Roll raw edge of sock and glue on top of snowman's head for his hat. (Adult) Take a needle and put a piece of string through the top of the hat, to use as a hanger for the tree.

CHRISTMAS GIFT BOX ORNAMENT

Small box (such as a medicine box, soap or Jell-O)
Christmas wrapping paper
Curling ribbon
Glue stick or scotch tape

Take the box that you are going to use and wrap it completely with wrapping paper, holding in on to the box with either glue or scotch tape. Tie ribbon around the box, with ends coming to the top. Leave it long enough that you can tie a few bows to it. Make 3 or 4 small bows and tie to the top of the gift with the ribbon you left on the top. You can hang from the tree by just putting a hook on one of the bows.

BUTTON SNOWMAN

Large 1 ½" white button
Medium ¾" to 1" white button
Small black piece of felt or craft foam
Piece of ribbon
Piece of string
Tacky glue or glue gun (if helping the child)

Start by cutting the black felt or foam in a 2" by 2" square, and a ½" by 3" rectangle. Glue the rectangle on the bottom of the square to make the hat. Set aside.

Over lapping slightly, glue the large white button onto the small white button. Take the hat and glue it to the top of the smaller button. Take the piece of ribbon and tie it at the neckline of the snowman for his scarf. Tie a piece of string to the back of his scarf to hang from the tree.

RUDOLPH CLOTHESPIN ORNAMENT

3 Flat clothespins
2 tiny wiggly eyes
Little red pompom
Small piece of white felt
Piece of yarn
Tacky glue

Glue two of the clothes pins together, one on top of the other. This will make the body and legs of the reindeer. Glue the other clothespin the opposite way, to make the head and antlers. The solid parts of the clothespins should be glued together.

Glue the tiny wiggly eyes and the little red pompom on the head of the reindeer. From the white felt, cut a small oval with one end pointed. Glue this on the back of the reindeer for his tail. Tie a piece of yarn to the reindeer's neck to hang from the tree.

CHRISTMAS CARD ORNAMENT

Christmas cards
Orange juice lid or canning jar lid
8" piece of ribbon
Glue

Take the lid that you will be using and trace it around 2 pictures on Christmas cards of scene or object of your choice. Cut out the circle pictures that you have traced. Set aside.

Cut an 8" piece of ribbon, fold it in half and glue ends on each upper side of the lid. Glue a circle picture on each side of the lid. You can glue on a line of glitter to the edges of the lid to add a little sparkle if you wish.

PAINT STICK ORNAMENT

This ornament looks cute hanging from a door knob over the winter months.

Paint stick stirrer
1" x 12" piece of material
2 wiggly eyes
Black craft foam
6"- 8" small stick
Red yarn or cording
Tiny orange button or pompom
3 small buttons
Tacky glue

Paint the paint stirrer stick white and let dry. The smaller indented part of the stick will be the head. Take 8" red yarn or cording, fold in half and glue the ends to the very top front of the snowman's head. This will be the hanger for the snowman.

Cut a piece of the black craft foam in to the shape of a top hat, about 2" by 2". Glue the hat on the top of the head, covering the ends of the hanger. Beneath the hat, glue on the 2 wiggly eyes. Next, glue on the orange button or pompom for his nose. Cut a ¾" piece of the red yarn or cording and glue on for his mouth.

Cut a 1" x 12" piece of material and tie on the indent of the paint stick for his scarf. Take a 6" to 8" stick and glue it to the back of the snowman, about an inch under the scarf. This will be the snowman's arms.

DRUM ORNAMENT

Toilet paper or paper towel roll
Red felt
White felt
Gold cording or thin gold ribbon
Gold sequins
Glue

Cut the roll 2 ½" high. Trace the ends of the roll on the white felt, making 2, one for the top and the bottom of the drum. Glue each of this to the ends of the roll. Cut a red piece of felt 2 ½" x 5 ½". Glue this piece around the drum.

Next take the gold cording or ribbon and cut (3) 6" pieces and (6) 2 ½" pieces. Glue the 2 ½" pieces on the drum to form V shapes. Take one of the 6" pieces and fold in half to make hanger for the drum. Glue this ribbons edges to the top outer edge of the drum. Glue the other 6" pieces to the outer edges of the top and bottom of the drum. Take 6 gold sequins and glue one to each end of the V shapes.

Hope the kids enjoy doing some of these.
