Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor Product Review

Kassidy Emmerson
I love popcorn. It's one of nature's most perfect snacks. Popcorn is 100% whole grain. Whole grains are a good source of fiber and nutrients. Fiber makes you feel full longer, so it can be helpful for weight loss. Since I'm a huge fan of popcorn, when I saw a TV ad for Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor, I knew I had to try it. The cheese is one of the two new flavors- Spicy Nacho being the other- the company has introduced.

Price and Availability
I found Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor at Kroger. A 3-bag box cost under 5 bucks. You can log onto Conagrafoods' web site and use their Store Locator to find other places that carry Orville Redenbacher popcorn.

Product Ingredients
Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor contains popping corn, palm oil, salt, colored with yellow 5 lake and yellow 6 lake, less than 2% of: natural and artificial flavor, TBHQ and citric acid (for freshness).

Be advised that Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor contains milk.

A serving size of Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor is 2 tablespoons of unpopped kernels, which makes about 4-1/2 cups popped corn. There are 2-1/2 servings in a bag of Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor.

Each cup of popped corn contains 30 calories, 20 from fat. It also contains 14 total grams of fat, 6 grams saturated fat, 2 grams polyunsaturated fat, 5 grams monounsaturated fat, 340 milligrams sodium, 60 milligrams potassium, 16 grams carbohydrates, 3 grams dietary fiber and 2 grams protein.

It's good that Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor does not contain trans fat and cholesterol. If you're concerned about diacetyl butter flavorings, this product has none added, according to the box. (To read more about how the diacetyl chemical and its link to an uncommon lung disease, read "How Safe is that Microwave Popcorn You're Popping?" by Patty Oh.)

Taste Test and Conclusion
Does it taste good? Is Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor easy to make? My family and I have always preferred this brand over several others. The name "Orville Redenbacher" has long been associated with light, fluffy, great tasting popcorn.

Yes, Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor tastes good. It's got a very cheesy flavor. It's a bit pricey, but you can log onto the Simple and Delicious web site and grab a dollar off coupon if you want to try a box.

Now for the bad news... will I buy Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor again? Probably not. It's easy to place the unopened bag in the microwave to make the popcorn, but afterward, you'll have an oily mess to clean up (see my picture). After I made the first bag of Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor, I placed a folded paper towel under the ends of the other two bags to catch the oil. Be aware also that you'll need to wipe the oil off the opening and the side of the bag once it's removed from the microwave.

Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn - Cheddar Cheese Flavor tastes great, but I'm not sure it's worth the mess. Read "How to Make Delicious Homemade Popcorn Seasonings" if you want to make your own delicious popcorn at home.

Love my popcorn, but am a purist - the plain jane stuff :-)

That's a good idea about the plate, Jan, but then you'd have an oily plate to deal with, and I wouldn't like that either.

Oh darn ~ the messiness would certainly be a turn off for me. I have trouble keeping my microwave clean as it is......

Call me old fashioned, but I still love plain ol' salt& butter.
