Orville Redenbacher's Tender White Gourmet Popping Corn

Ray Rolstone
I am a connoisseur of popcorn, and I have tried a lot brands over the past forty years. Not quite old enough to have experienced cooking popcorn over an open fire, but as a young child I remember the family buying bags of popping corn. A little oil in a large covered pot and a lot of manual shaking to keep the popped corn from burning. Those were the days! Of course you had to use just the right amount of oil. Too little and the popcorn burned; too much and the popcorn was greasy. You wanted buttered popcorn, you melted a stick of butter and poured it over the popcorn. Then there were the oily pots to clean afterwards.

Then came the wonder of Jiffy Pop in 1959. What a wonderful marketing idea, everything packaged and ready to go. All you had to do was heat and serve. And what fun to watch as the aluminum foil slowly expanded as the corn popped. It was almost magic, and we felt spoiled. Best of all, there was no pot to cleanup afterwards. You just tossed it all away. Although its popularity has long since faded, Jiffy Pop is still marketed today.

With the invention of the microwave oven came microwave popcorn, a quick and easy snack without a mess. For popcorn lovers, it was a godsend. In as little as three minutes, you have a satisfying snack that can be eaten right out of the bag or poured into a bowl if you want to share.

There are many brands of microwave popcorn: Pop Secret, Act II and Jolly Time just to name some of the most familiar brand names. I tried them all until I discovered the premium popping corn, Orville Redenbacher's. It costs a little more, but then the best product always demands a slightly higher price. Unlike the many lesser quality brands, Orville Redenbacher's consistently produces large, fluffy, flavorful and delicious popcorn. No heavy oil taste as found with many of the cheaper brands, and where those cheaper brands can often leave a significant quantity of un-popped corn, Orville Redenbacher's pops almost completely, leaving but a few un-popped kernels. Another pleasurable attribute of the Orville Redenbacher's brand is their selection of corn kernels with a thin shell. Many of the cheap brands of popcorn have hard thick shell.

Orville Redenbacher's offers numerous varieties of it gourmet popping corn in both their standard and mini bag sizes. They offer four different levels of buttering from light to ultimate for those who desire butter flavored popcorn. Watching your weight? Orville Redenbacher's has their "Smart Pop!" line advertised as 94% fat free. Indulgence without gilt! They also offer a number of flavored popcorns: the sweet Kettle Korn, caramel, cheddar cheese and spicy nacho flavorings just to name a few. My preference is the unadulterated Tender White. Just great lightly salted popcorn perfection! It is just as Orville Redenbacher's advertises, "Popcorn Perfection in Every Bite."
