Osama Bin Laden Killed In Pakistan Raid

In what is being described by CNN as a "surgical strike" carried out by a select, small group of US forces, Osama Bin Laden was killed in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on Sunday, May 1, 2011. Finally, after nearly 3,000 Americans murdered, and nearly 10 years of waiting for some pathetic form of closure for enduring such a terrible day, we have news worth celebrating. Finally.

And celebrate we will! As soon as news broke, New Yorkers flooded city streets and made a beeline for Ground Zero to come together in jubilation. In cities across America, from Washington, D.C., to Tucson, Ariz., citizens are welcoming the news Osama Bin Laden is dead, and experiencing something of an afterglow. We will never forget the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and tonight, we celebrate in their honor. Damn near three thousand homicides have just been solved in one fell swoop, and the killer dealt with appropriately. That is something worth getting excited about!

President Obama began his address Sunday, "Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children."

President Obama explained Sunday's raid, which took place in a large city in Pakistan, had been months in the making. The location and neutralization of Osama Bin Laden all started with a lead from as far back as August 2010. Obama said, "Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."

Amen.
