Hollywood actors are sometimes criticized for offering their views on public matters. Why can't they? Why shouldn't they? many of them have traveled all over the world, and have seen up close some of the more vulnerable areas of the world. Hollywood was ahead of America when it came to recognizing the debacle that the Iraq war has become. And they are ahead of many Americans in recognizing the dangers of global warming.
Al Gore made the announcement about the Academy moving toward being green with Leonardo DiCaprio, who also has taken a leadership role on the matter. They came on stage just after Melissa Etheridge finished singing the song "I need to wake up" from Mr. Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth." Incidentally, the song is a nominee.
Leo began with "So Mr, Gore.....is there anything you want to announce?" Drawing laughter from the crowd. He went on to say that "for the first time in the history of the Oscars, this show has officially gone green.
Mr. Gore went on to explain what that means, saying "that environmentally intelligent practices have been integrated fully into every aspect of the planning and production of these Academy Awards. And you know what, it is not as hard as you might think. We have along way to go, but all of us can do something in our own lives to make a difference."
Mr. DiCaprio went on to explain how more information can be found at www.oscar.com and then asked Mr. Gore "now are you sure" that he doesn't want to make a "major, major, announcement?" Alluding to a possible Presidential announcement. Mr. Gore acted like he was giving in and started to make an announcement, when the infamous Oscar orchestra started playing. It was a good joke, and a good way for the topic of global warming to be addressed to a huge audience.

Post a CommentIt was great to see the issue of global warming taking a stand at such an infulential place like the Oscars. You mentioned that it was getting no leadership from the whitehouse but I think it is in the fact that Al Gore was there, that was his film sure he's not the president but he's a political figure. I really enjoyed that part of the oscars and I think Melissa Ethridge deserved that oscar for her song. I really loved her song!
I thought that was great, but you know people will be going "Oh, it's that darn liberal Hollywood." And even though attempt after attempt has been made to differentiate this from a political controversy, it still will be. That is what makes me sad. But it is good to see the effort being made, especially as one of "those kids growing up in this world."
That was a good moment and a running theme tonight about being green and to make a difference. Its time that we do start to be more conscious about what we use and how we grow as we learn more over time and to adapt accordingly.
I got a good laugh at that 'major announcement' he was cut-off from making.
I enjoyed this article, as I too was pleased to see so much being made of being 'green' this year at the awards show. Yeah, celebrities will probably always get flack for voicing their opinions, and loudly. Because let's face it, there are some that abuse that privilege - haha. But to be honest, why wouldn't they - and furthermore, why SHOULDN'T they? If only everybody could have such a public platform to make changes in the world. Since everybody can't, I respect those who use their fame to urge the rest of the world to make changes for the better.
Global warming has seemed like such a daunting, hopeless issue, as hard as that is for me to admit. To hear the facts about it, makes one question if there really is a chance at getting enough people to act on the matter and make a difference. I think that tonight was a big step in the right direction... Now we're getting somewhere.
