Oscar Moments in Time

Monica Newton
How many of us sit and watch the Grammys, the Emmys, the Oscars? We sit back and have a spurt of wishful thinking that some day we could be up there, or regret that we never went for our dreams. Yet, we all have Oscar moments in time every day and those are the ones that truly mean the most.

When you wake up to find that God has given you another day to spend with your family, your friends, your special someone, that is an Oscar moment in time. Another day with someone you love when so many are spending it missing someone they lost through death, separation or time. How many hug your children just a little bit tighter when you hear about an abducted child? How many give your partner an extra deep kiss because your co-worker has announced she is getting a divorce? How many celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day more than once a year because your best friend lost her parents and you are reminded about how lucky you are?

When you wake up to find that the universe has brought you the most wonderful guy in the world, that is an Oscar moment in time. He may not be perfect to everyone else but he is perfect for you. You actually begin to think there is something to the term "soulmates." He is incredibly romantic, supports your dreams, encourages you and you, in turn, do the same for him. You both find yourselves wondering where the other has been all your lives and then put the thought aside as you just celebrate the Oscar moment in time. This Oscar is going to stay right there in a place of honor for life.

Have you ever picked up the phone to hear one of the most beautiful voices in the world saying "Hi Lady, how's my beautiful Mom?" We all cherish memories with our children. We hold those memories even closer when they grow up and go off to war. Old World War II movies used to seem romantic, now they are viewed in a more realistic light. With the media being in the middle of all of it, we hear of a casualty in our unit sometimes before the home post does. Each ring of the phone or knock of the door sparks terror in your heart but when you hear that voice on the other end, you are in the midst of the ultimate Oscar moment in time. No trophy or award on earth can come close to hearing the evidence that your child is okay knowing he is in a war zone, at school when a tornado strikes, or whether she is having an asthma attack.

Do you ever have a day when you are feeling sorry for yourself? Then someone says something to you that clarifies things. Like when you run into someone you haven't seen since high school and she confesses that one day she felt like ending it all because she did not think anyone liked her. Then you walked down the hall and you said hello to her and gave her a high five. Now 20 years later she is telling you that you gave her renewed hope just because you said hello. That was an incredible Oscar moment in time for this writer.

Try volunteering through the church or community. When you hear a young boy ask his mother what they are going to eat that night for supper and you are able to give them a box of groceries, it blesses you just as much as it does them. Nothing makes us feel as good about life as when we make it better for those less fortunate.

This writer woke up this morning and reflected on her own Oscar moments in time. They were all still there, just looking a little dusty on the shelf. Taking a metaphorical scarf, I dusted them off and they shined so bright they lit up my heart. If you are feeling a little down, maybe you should dust your Oscars off, too. Believe it or not, we all have Oscar moments in time that a golden symbol can not come close to comparing to.
