Oscar Predictions: A Roundup of Three Categories in This Sunday's Academy Awards

B J Abel
The Oscars are coming up this Sunday and many predictions have been made. Here are my two cents for three of the top categories.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

This category, for most people, is a no-brainer. The masterful portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight by Heath Ledger would have been by itself a shoe in for the award. To compile on his untimely death and star power, the outcome is more certain than Angelina Jolie adopting more children. They are a few commentaries that project another underdog winner but most are attempts to be the only one if the impossible happens and Ledger fails to sweep the Best Supporting Actor awards thought the entire season.

BEST ACTOR

Sean Penn in Milk is the favorite with his masterful performance, but I'm looking at another for the statue. Mickey Rourke is the popular choice due to his "regular guy" personality and come from behind story in real life and in the film The Wrestler he's up for. I'm taking Brad Pitt for his outstanding performance in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This film will just miss on many awards in the show and almost be held without until the shocker of the evening when Pitt is rewarded for his craft and unique style in this funny and moving film. To think if The Curious Case of Benjamin Button won any other major award and he would be left out, questions the validity of this Oscar. But I think its well deserved.

BEST PICTURE

With a great class of Best Picture this year, it's definitely a horse race to the finish. The recent controversy with the young actors from Slumdog Millionaire will keep them just out of reach and the amazing portrayal in Frost/Nixon will be passed as the spirit for this movie has just passed after the election. Milk will come out on top to reinforce that a social topic mixed with politics and murder is a perfect recipe for an Oscar.
