Americans love dirt, and the more famous someone gets, the harder we try to dig it up. Unfortunately for Marion, it wasn't that hard to find some reason for Americans to dislike the actress. Of course Americans want to dislike her, because she's French to begin with, and the whole world knows how America feels about the French. To give one of our prestigious awards that should have gone to the beloved Juno (whose real name is Ellen Page, by the way), is just blasphemous. So what did she do? She attacked America in two places where it really hurts: 9/11 and the moon landing.
She stated in an interview about a year ago that she believes that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated by the U.S. government because the buildings would cost too much to modernize, so it was easier to just destroy them. This is an outrageous claim, but with the way the government here has been, who knows? Based on what the film Fahrenheit 9/11 revealed, the attacks could have at least been prevented, given the government's knowledge of terrorist activity before they happened. So maybe in addition to keeping George Bush in office, they were getting rid of unwanted buildings by just letting it happen. (Okay, this may be a little out there, but you really can't trust our government, so I don't put anything past them.)
She also claimed that the moon landing was a hoax based off of documentaries she has seen about it. This is more likely, and having seen the documentaries myself, I am convinced that we never landed on the moon. There is loads of evidence against it, like inconsistencies in the film footage, the fact that America was pretty far behind the Soviet Union in the "space race" at the time, and suddenly jumped ahead and got a man on the moon, even though the Soviet Union stated that they were nowhere near that point, and the fact that the thin, aluminum-like walls of the lunar lander would have never withstood the deadly radiation of space. It's a widely-debated subject, and everyone's entitled to their opinion on it, but given the evidence presented, we shouldn't be so angry at someone saying they believe in the conspiracy.
So, welcome to America, Marion Cotillard! You should have just been another cute and loveable French girl, like Amelie (whose real name is Audrey Tautou). This is the way we do things here: when someone is at their highest point, we see what we can find to drag them down. We're an insecure country, and dragging anyone we can down makes us feel better about ourselves. Sure, we have free speech over here, but just because it's free doesn't mean it can't get you in trouble. So if I were you, I wouldn't jump into the American film scene anytime soon. Stay in France. You can do what you like, say what you like, and you won't get talked into doing horrible studio-controlled movies like so many great American actresses are. Viva La France!
