OsoCozy Prefold in Action

A Review

Sabra Onstott
OsoCozy diapers are one of the more readily-available brands of prefold cloth diapers out there. They may be bought online from Amazon.com as well as from specialty cloth diaper stores. This review is based on four months of regular use--you'll get more than a quick first impression!

Specs

This review is for OsoCozy unbleached prefold cloth diapers, bought in a package of six from Amazon.com for $11.99. OsoCozy's diapers are made from Indian cotton in a birdseye weave, with a center panel that is eight layers thick, and side panels which are four layers thick. The diapers are rated to fit babies from 7 to 15 pounds.

First Impression

I also own a half-dozen of unbleached cotton flats from OsoCozy, which are very thick. Out of the box, the prefolds are obviously of similar high quality. Like the flats, they are not very soft initially. Pre-washing (I followed the recommended preparation method of two cycles of washing and drying the diapers before use), the diapers measure 12x16". My only complaint about the diapers is an aesthetic one: like other prefolds, these are three panels, with stitching to set off the thicker center panel. The stitching itself looks perfect, but the thicker panel extends approximately one inch beyond the stitching. This is not typical of first-quality diapers. Although these should fit my three-month-old well, they seem a bit small immediately. I am only able to use one fold, the bikini twist. Pins slide through easily, though.

Current Impression

Right now, the diapers measure 10.25x13". The shrinkage of 1.75" width-wise and 3" length-wise is considerably more than the 5% - 10% shrinkage the company tells you to expect. However, it is in line with actual experience of several different brands of diapers.

Aesthetically, the diapers have improved greatly. They are very "quilty" in appearance--thick and soft, just exactly what you would want to put on a baby's bottom. They are not as soft as birdseye flats, but they are comparable to other prefold diapers. They have not stained at all. The off-center thicker panel is no longer readily visible.

Functionally, the diapers are of excellent quality. They are very absorbent, and do not cause rash. In spite of their size, I use them before any other prefold I own. Though my daughter is now, at seven months old, three pounds beyond the outer limit of their size limit for these diapers, they still fit her as well as they did when they were purchased. Someone with a smaller baby could easily use these for most if not all of their child's first year. In addition to the bikini twist, I regularly use them pad-folded into a size small Bummi Super Whisper Wrap. These are the only diapers I have that can still be used with these covers, and thus have effectively extended the life of the covers, which is a definite plus. Additionally, they work very well as inserts for pocket diapers--much less bulky than a folded up flat diaper.

Overall

At approximately $2 per diaper via Amazon.com (or just under $72 for a beginning stash of three dozen), these are some of the cheapest prefold diapers out there in this size. They dry quickly and are very simple to wash, which are typical aspects of this diaper type. They only improve with continued use, leading me to believe they would be an excellent choice for someone planning to cloth diaper two or three children in succession. They are not overwhelmingly the best brand out there, but they are an excellent, economical choice for cloth diapering, and are certainly a worthy purchase, as they can easily see a parent through the first year of diapering. I would rate them a definite 4 stars out of 5, and recommend them to anyone.
