Oumou Sangare is a Mali singer with a strong bent for womens rights. She touches controversial topics like women's sensuality, and sings about her objections to polygamy, often drawing the ire of traditional elders.

Oumou is the daughter of Aminata Diakhite, who was also a talented singer. She made her public performance debut at the age of six, singing for a huge crowd at Bamako's main sports arena, the Stade des Omnisports, and following her mother's advice to "....sing as if she were in the kitchen".

What is extremely delightful is to watch the skill with which she manages to weave Afro-Arab genres together into a an enchanting melody that has her audiences waiting for more. Using the traditional style of Wassoulou, she uses a six-stringed hunter's harp to emphasize her messages by painting a poignant musical picture.

Oumou will be performing in New York at Lehman College, 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West NY 10468, on November 21, 2010 at 8 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the New York Council of Malians Incorporated, & TS Management. For more information, or to purchase your tickets, please call 718-960-8000
