And that day's not far away,
When everybody's Irish.
At least that's what they say.
And I'll thank myself to change my tone
From First I'll Kiss the Blarney Stone
So many from the Emerald Isle,
In teaming crowds, not single file,
Ventured to this nation's shore,
Glad to do most any chore
To get their feet inside the door.
Some became cops and others police
Or did what they could to get a new lease
On life in a place where hope did abound,
And potatoes a-plenty could be dug from the ground.
Their numbers grew fast, and they soon made their marks
In theater, baseball and other such larks,
Then earnest work, both needed and grand,
Such as being leader of all this fair land.
The reach of the Irish extends now so far,
When all claim to be...well, maybe they are.
Erin go bragh!

Post a CommentI'm Irish and let me say, "Thanks".
Thanks very much, from the great-great granddaughter of an Irish immigrant. :)
Now back in my college days we played a bit o' Erin go braghless! Nice tribute poem, Thomas! Me granny was a Daly, related to Kennedy's of Boston. Seems a few of those folks got into politics along the way. And a writer here & there sprang out o' the auld sod, too!
My mommy would love this poem. Though she's also English and French, she is most proud of her Irish background.
This 'McGuire' is proud of your tribute!
Very nice tribute. Not one word about us being drunks! :) (Me mither's name is Dooley.)
I think it is a bigger celebration there than back on the emerald isle.
Hey, great work, Thomas!!
Great poem! Giving some page love.
So true! Nice poem, Thomas.
