Our Honeymoon Journey Through Southern Arizona

Aaron Mitcham
When me and Susie got married my mom said she would pay for our honeymoon. We were young and my job would not let me off for more than a few days. My mom suggested Bisbee Arizona. She said there was a beautiful bed and breakfast there, and they had lots of neat historical sites. I agreed that sounded neat as me and my wife like history stuff. I hung up with my and promptly forgot the name of the town she said. I looked on the Internet and found a bed and breakfast in Benson Arizona and thought that must have been it.

The Astronomer Inn is located in Benson, about an hours drive from Safford. I called, got prices, and all the relevant information then called my mom. I gave her the number and she made the arrangements for us.

We decided to take a tour of southern Arizona rather stay in one spot so our plans started at the Olney House in Safford Az. The Olney house is a beautiful 2 story historical site in Safford Az.This is where we shared our first official breakfast as a married couple. They had two outdoor rooms and several rooms inside the main house available for stay. In between the outdoor rooms was a large and secluded hot tub. Our stay at the Olney house was a pleasant one and we returned a few years later on an anniversary trip.

After a nights stay, we then traveled south west to Benson. We stayed at the Astronomers Inn, which is a hidden jewel in southern Arizona. They have a small pond not far away, and we boated and hiked around the facility during the day time. At night they broke out the telescopes and showed us around the evening sky. They have several large telescopes and binoculars set up for your viewing enjoyment. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about space and the surrounding area. One of the first keepsakes of our marriage was a touch lamp we bought at a dollar store in Benson itself.

Our next days journey took us on a meandering trip further south and west to Tombstone. We visited a monastery that was home to a huge cross and beautiful gardens. We made our way to Tombstone and checked out all the trappings of Tombstone. For those of you who don't know, Tombstone is home to the OK Corral and the stories of Wyatt Earp. If you go prepare to pay for just about everything. I went as a child and you could do more for less, but when I returned as an adult it seemed like you had to pay to walk down the street.

We left Tombstone and returned home. Our honeymoon behind us our life before us. We have pictures and memories and I plan on taking my kids to see some of these places and hopefully impart a little family history into them.
