On the 13th of each month, crowds flock to a few white crosses about 10 miles northeast of California City, California in the Mojave Desert. Numbering in the hundreds - thousands if the 13th falls on a weekend - they huddle against the wind and endure temperatures that may be in the 30s or in the 100s. They hold rosaries, religious pictures, and cameras, and wait for the Virgin Mary to appear in the sky.

Some visitors are devotees of the Virgin Mary and travel to locations around the world that are renowned for her appearances. But at Our Lady of the Rock, most are Southern Californians who believe that something blessed happens in this desert on the 13th of each month. Some just as eagerly await the arrival of Maria Paula Acuna who comes to Our Lady of the Rock and declares that Mary is in their midst.

Acuna claims to see the mother of Jesus with regularity and clarity. She describes her as beautiful, young and about 5 feet 5 inches tall.

All of this began when Acuna's daughter became ill with leukemia and told Acuna that she saw a beautiful lady who told her to tell her mother to leave the world behind and surrender herself to God and His service. Acuna went to Lopez Canyon near the family's home in Pacoima, California, every day from May 3 to July 24, 1989 to pray.

Acuna's first vision came while she was praying the rosary. She said a lady with white clothing stood on a cloud with a great rosary in her hands and said, "I am your Lady of the Rock, Queen of Peace of Southern California. I come to bring you the peace and love that is so needed. I will visit the homes, and I will form one family for the service of the Lord, Our God. I will form an army, and we will work together. I will bring my angel from faraway lands. In him you will confide and tell all that I am indicating to you. Go in the peace of God."

Acuna brought crowds of people with her to Lopez Canyon until the owners of the property complained. The Blessed Mother told Acuna the desert is wide, so they went to California City. There is a rosary service on the 13th of each month and Acuna receives a new message from the Virgin Mary. Vendors sell rosaries, religious-themed jewelry, and umbrellas if it looks like rain.

Acuna says she doesn't know why she started coming to the desert on the 13th, but suggests there is some history of Mary appearing on that day.

Catholic authorities have officially suggested there is no Mary at Our Lady of the Rock. After more than a year of investigating, they found it to be due to somebody's imagination, not anyone's bad will. The diocese in Fresno, which has immediate authority over California City, has concurred with Los Angeles officials, but has placed no restrictions on people gathering at the site.

ME and my mother saw the Virgin Mary in California city, along wd some mexican children and their mothers. I dont know why some can not see her. I was asking for a miracle & she gave it to our family. For the Catholic church to declare its not true, just because the Virgin Mary only chose to be seen by some is wrong ! I am not very holy , but I believe in the Holy Trinity, the saints, angels and the Holy Bible . My phone ( 323) 335 0870. Praise the Lord for His goodness !

Here's a link to some photos I took at Our Lady of the Rock. I am not Catholic, but I went because old reporters still like to investigate. I took these personal photos, not as a reporter, but there as a personal observer.

I've been here and the sun did dance in the sky and the pictures i got were simply amazing ... had an atheist doubting himself.LOL
to the eye the sun seemed to dance but my camera caught a ball of light turn into a perfect figure of what we see as Mary. the figure seems to be made of the clouds BUT my pictures are in succession and there were no clouds in the first picture only the ball of light.
I went there not expecting anything and didn't realize what I captured on film until i got home .... AMAZING
