Our Nation Has Enough Problems of It's Own

Let's Fix Our Own Before Taking on Other Countries' Problems

Marcus Kelley
As the most powerful and richest country in the world, the United States has it's duties to other countries. However, I believe we have enough issues to deal with at home that need fixing before we do the same for other nations. And I don't think I'm alone. Our streets are filled with the homeless who have little food and no place to stay, but we spend millions if not billions of dollars to Iraq, a situation that most in this country believe to be a mistake. Of course, like most things in life this involves politics. And we can thank "Dubya" for the mess we're in. We've got less than two years everybody. This is all of the Bush bashing you'll hear from me.

In my opinion democracy should not be forced on any nation. We tend to hear the word "insurgents" alot in the news. It seems to me that we are the insurgents. At this point in time Iraq doesn't know what it wants. There are those who are loyal to Saddam even after his fall. There are also Iraqis who want to be free. Do we know what actual percentage of these people fall in? Not exactly. Quite honestly this depends on who you ask from day to day. The simple fact is nothing is going to change overnight. And our troops are there to help bring order and to train the Iraqi police to bring order when we decide to leave. I don't claim to have any political expertise, however, in my opinion, there will never be peace in the middle east. There has been blood shed in that region of the world since humans have recorded history. Let's not forget where the present country of Iraq lies. If anybody has ever been to Sunday School you'll remember the Garden of Eden. In Genesis we can find the rivers Tigris and Euphrates mentioned. What modern day country to we find these ancient rivers? Iraq. I don't think it's confidence that this is where human life was created by God. And this may very well be the place where life could end as we know it. Let's let these people fight there own battles. We can't fix all the world's problems. Let them kill each other off. This may sound evil, but I don't think it's our place to end another country's civil war. Did we see Iraq invade our country doing our civil war? It's basically the same thing.

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where lots of issues are brought up everyday. Louisiana has some of the worst roads and interstates in our nation. Anybody that knows Louisiana politics knows how corrupt it is. The state and local government spend funds to build tall concrete walls to block out the noise for people who decide to build or move into houses right next to the interstate that has huge pot holes and cracks. The powers that be would rather "be in bed" with casino companies than reform the rated F school system in the state. And let's not forget about the devastated city of New Orleans. One would hope after a year and half a city in this great nation of ours would be close to normal. But this is far from the case. And yet our hard-earned tax dollars continue to go overseas to fix another country's problems. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see something has gone wrong here. Don't get me wrong, I agree that we should help nations who can't help themselves. However, after we deal with our nation.

It deeply concerns me that most Americans (myself included) don't have health care. Growing up I didn't have it due to my parents not being able to afford it. Now that I'm grown I can't. The money we've spent in Iraq and other countries could easily pay for or at least make it very affordable for most families in our country. This just seems very, well..stupid.

While it is true that there are many concerns here in America, that doesn't remove a resposibilty to world affairs. Many of your basic assumptions about Iraq are wrong..first, it was attacked to establish permanent military bases and to excercise control of oil in the persian gulf. And the war has strained oil supplies. When supplies are tight but regular, everyone at the top makes money (the saudis, the bushies, etc) and to grant these large profits to the industry, we have seen billions wasted. They also want the public to lose interest in the rest of the world, then everything is reduced to an adversarial level.
