Out of the Mouths of Babes is a ever-continuing collection of writings by my class of ESL students. They're among my favorite essays and poems, some of them are sad, others make you think, and even more make you laugh. The following piece is one of my favorites from this year's ESL magazine, Our Immigrant Stories." It was written by Elizabeth, for her grandmother who passed away not too long ago in her native El Salvador. One of my best friends picked it out as his favorite from this year's collection and I hope you'll like it too!
Mamasita Margarita
I see you praying, looking at the sky with tears
A few days ago, you held my hand
And guided me through my path
A few days ago, I looked into your eyes
I never thought you were going to leave me alone
I never thought I needed you as much as I need you now
I can still smell your lotion, like a garden of roses
Your laugh is recorded in my ears
Your religion is in my heart and in my soul
Your eyes burn an image in mine
Through your journeys, you taught me lessons
The woman I am now is the woman you always wanted me to be
When sometimes I feel alone and upset I know I can always look
At the sky and stars and see you there
Or I can always feel you next to me
Walking in your bright white dress
My angel
Praying for me
