Out With the Old: How to Spring Clean Your Relationship

Kyra Lennon
As springtime rolls around, most people get to thinking about having a good tidy up of the house so that the dazzling sunshine doesn't highlight any lurking cobwebs. Have you ever considered giving your relationship a spring clean too? Over the winter months, people tend to become complacent and let things slide more. There is no shame in these little relationship slips, they happen to everyone. But if left to deteriorate, they can eventually become irreparable. While you are giving your home a little spritz up, why not give your relationship a boost too?

Clear out the negative aspects

During spring cleaning season, we rummage through our old junk and throw out everything we don't need anymore. The same can be done during a lengthy chat with your partner. If you have any problems you have left to fester, it is time to get them out into the open so they can be removed. If there are changes you feel need to be made, you should be able to make them fairly easily. Likewise, allow your partner to share his feelings too and be open to his suggestions. Just like with household clutter, there may be some things that you can't get rid of but anything that can be taken to the trash, should be.

Polish up on areas you have neglected

My boyfriend and I regularly take the time to make sure we don't neglect certain areas of our relationship. Because he works away, it would be very easy to let some things pass us by. When he comes home, we spend as much time together as possible and work on the aspects of our lives we have missed out on while we were apart. Whichever area of your relationship you feel needs work, use the season as an excuse to clean it up. Vow to pay more attention to your boyfriend so he feels like you are really listening and in return, perhaps ask him to try harder to help around the house. These small things will make a big difference.

Make new goals

The best part of spring cleaning is the excitement of new things to replace the old. This is doubly true when you cleanse your relationship. Perhaps you have already fulfilled the goals you had as a couple at the start of your relationship. Even if you haven't, there is always room for a few more. Arrange to have an official date night once every two weeks or plan to get healthy together. Having goals you can work towards together will keep your relationship strong. Depending on the task you set for yourselves, you could be reaping the benefits for a long time to come.

Give yourselves a reward for your hard work

When you are almost at the end of your cleaning regime, no doubt you will feel quite accomplished. But now what? After all that work, there should be some kind of reward! The immediate reward is a healthier relationship but if you need a little more, why not treat yourselves to something special? Book a holiday or do something you have wanted to do for ages but have never gotten around to. Even if all you can afford is an overnight stay in a hotel or a day trip to somewhere new, it will be a well deserved treat for you both to enjoy.

The saying "out with the old and in with the new" is quite fitting in the spring. Give your relationship a makeover by clearing out all the negatives and refreshing the positives. It will definitely be worth all the hard work!
