Although the city of Bloomington, Indiana is most famous for being the home of the prestigious Indiana University, those who favor the outdoors might be surprised to learn that there are a number of nature and outdoor opportunities available as well. If you're out and about this summer and are looking for a great way to enjoy some of the gorgeous summer weather, be sure to visit one of these great outdoor attractions located near the city of Bloomington, Indiana.

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

With its location near downtown Bloomington, the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve is the perfect place to spend outside in the Summer weather. Located on 1,200 acres, everyone is sure to find something to do at this fantastic Indiana outdoor attraction. The lake itself measures over 100 acres, and provides both boating and fishing opportunities for visitors. There are a number of nature trails to explore, and the park even offers naturalist-guided tours at set times during the day, making this a perfect visitor spot for those interested in the wildlife of Indiana.

Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve

For those who want to get into some of the more rugged terrain around Bloomington, be sure to visit the Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve, which features a 75-foot high limestone bluff. This truly stunning geological formation also allows visitors to observe the power of tree species to adapt, as can be seen from the various tree species that can be seen clinging to the bluff. There is a canyon nearby, which is often a site where numerous species of wildflowers bloom. If you're looking to get into the wild and explore some of the most fascinating plant an animal species, be sure to visit Cedar Bluff Nature Preserve.

Hoosier National Forest

Recreational resources available at this outdoor attraction include: camping, picnicking, hiking and backpacking on approximately 266 miles of trails (available for horseback riding, biking, and hiking,) scenic driving, fishing and, for the truly adventurous, collecting the various forest products that can be found throughout Hoosier (such as mushrooms, firewood, berries, and arrowheads.) Paynetown State Recreation Area

For those who want to go camping, the Paynetown State Recreation Area is one of the best choices near Bloomington. They offer a number of camping resources, including both electric and non-electric campsites. A number of other recreational opportunities are available, including a beach area, boat rentals, camp store, and hiking trails. Also be sure to visit the Paynetown Nature Center, which features displays and information about Lake Monroe's wildlife and history.
