Outdoor Kitchen Design Spotlights: Preway Freestanding Cone Fireplace

Planning a Retro, Mid Century Modern Outdoor Kitchen

Mary Starr Johnson-Gerard, Ph.D.
Outdoor kitchens have a history that dates back to when humans first learned to cook foods. The old saying that "what goes around comes around" is the truth when it comes to an outdoor kitchen. Historically, using an outdoor kitchen was a way to take the heat of cooking outside of the house in the summer months so the house would not become unbearably hot. An outdoor kitchen allowed the family members who were cooking to have some relief from the heat by being able to catch a breeze or stay in the shade. Each outdoor kitchen was unique to the woman in charge and in the beginning contained the basics needed for meal preparation.

There has been an increased interest in outdoor kitchens over the past few years. The reason for the new interest is not to keep the house cool by cooking outdoors; but because outdoor kitchens are cool, hip, and fun. The focus of this article is about how to plan and design a retro mid century modern outdoor kitchen. If you appreciate the grace and beauty of a mid century modern freestanding cone fireplace in your home, then you are really going to enjoy planning how to include a vintage Preway or Majestic freestanding cone fireplace in your outdoor kitchen. Just think about how cool it would be to light a fire in a Preway freestanding cone fireplace in the evening. This would not only add extra warmth, it would set a mood quite different than the mood set by a modern freestanding fireplace or fire pit.

Having said all this, designing a retro vintage outdoor kitchen is really not much different than thinking and planning a modern outdoor kitchen. What will be different, and will take more time, is finding good quality vintage outdoor kitchen items such as a barbecue grill, patio or deck furniture, a great vintage cooler or refrigerator, vintage metal or stainless steel cabinets, and of course, the piece d' resistance -a vintage retro freestanding cone fireplace. Since you can't typically walk into a store and find vintage mid century modern outdoor kitchen equipment, you will have to go treasure hunting, but isn't this what is the most fun -the hunt?

Before you start treasure hunting, do some planning . Here are a few things to consider before buying anything for your outdoor kitchen: 1) how do you plan to use the outdoor kitchen (cook all meals outdoors, cook outdoors on weekends, only occasionally with guests, 2) decide what you can spend, 3) where are you going to put the outdoor kitchen (on an existing patio or deck, or build something new, 4) how much space do you have, 5) are you going to do any necessary installation or hire others to do it, and 6) what kind of lighting do you want. When you have this information defined, it is time to check out outdoor kitchen websites to get ideas about the many different kinds of outdoor kitchen arrangements. There are some resources listed at the end of this article.

Once you have these decisions made, you are ready to start looking for your vintage outdoor kitchen appliances, furniture, lighting etc. To do this you can look online and Google the specific item you want such as - Preway freestanding cone fireplace - vintage barbecue grill - vintage lawn furniture, etc. Craigslist is a great way to find vintage items. You can either check the area in which you live, or place a wanted ad. Another place to look is to search E-Bay.

Having a vintage outdoor kitchen ought to make you the talk of the neighborhood, if not the town. You may even get more invitations to dinner just so you will have to repay by hosting your own outdoor kitchen party.
