Outdoor Movie Theatre Events in Houston for Summer

Summer Outdoor Theatre in Houston is Fun Family Togetherness

Michy Lynn
When looking for something to do in Houston, especially for families, teens and single moms, there's nothing easier than packing a picnic basket or a cooler and heading to an outdoor theatre. Not only will you get a movie the family can enjoy, but you get the warm and balmy Gulf Coast weather'"which has been amazing this year'"and the sights, sounds and the fun of the great outdoors. Whether at a drive-in theatre in the car, tailgating, or on a blanket spread on the grass, there are several options for outdoor theatres in Houston.

TUTS: Theatre Under the Stars

No list of Houston outdoor theatres would be complete without including TUTS, the Theatre Under the Stars, in Houston, so it's mentioned here first. This musical play-styled theatre is a fantastic way to get a little culture without the stuffiness of a fancy theatre production. During the summer, Theatre Under the Stars is also known to do outdoor movie screenings when the troupe is not performing.

Miller Outdoor Theatre

With weekend and evening events, children's plays and productions, ballet, and more, Miller Outdoor Theatre is a great place to visit this summer or all season long in Houston. There are often video movie events, such as last year's Back to the Future event, where there was a movie marathon outdoors, complete with popcorn and crickets.

Now that we have the theatrical outdoor theatres out of the way, there are plenty of other outdoor theatres in and around Houston that offer movies. Let's look at some of the drive-in theatres that might be a great way to spend an evening.

The Showboat Theatre

Just a little bit outside of Houston (which is good, since it prevents the city haze from disrupting the viewing of the screen), The Showboat Theatre offers a selection of new releases and classical favorite movies. The concessions are clean and the drive is worth it to get out of the city for a bit. There are souvenirs, movies change every Friday night, and you'll want to be sure to bring cash, since they don't take checks or credit/debit cards.

Stars at Night Drive-in Theatre

This theatre is closed for repairs and is planning on being re-opened soon, which is great, since it's highly popular and many who have gone have great things to say about the theatre. We haven't gone yet, but we'd like to as soon as they re-open. Unfortunately for us, they are on the other side of Houston from us, out toward Katy. With a concession stand of basic movie-theatre popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, pickles, sodas and the like, you can eat there or bring your own cooler.

Where: Near Katy, Texas, outside of Houston

Until this last theatre starts showing movies again, the first ones are your best choices for outdoor theatres and drive ins near the Houston, Texas area. Each has its own schedule, so be sure to check the websites and call the box office before heading out. Also, they all have special events rolling throughout the summer, so you might want to check before making plans to ensure you're able to get tickets and admission to the event of your choice.

Enjoy Houston's outdoor theatres this summer.
