Outrage Over Iran Election Protests: Is it Time for a United Nations Foreign Legion?

Iran Protesters Need a United Nations Foreign Legion

Deborah Oakes, NPS
I just thought I was done writing about the Iran election protesters as I mentioned in my last article. However, I ran across this information and think maybe it's time. Maybe it's time for a UN foreign legion.

According to Mr. Edward Luttwak, director of Geo-economics of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a legion of mercenaries would not be subject to political interference as are armies deployed by their country. Deployment could take place after a majority vote by someone like the UN Security Council.

This legion would be expensive but costs are spread over several countries. The French Foreign Legion has already proved nationality is not the core of loyalty and cohesion among an elite fighting force. As far as recruitment, there are plenty of warriors according to Mr. Luttwak, that are interested in becoming members of such a group. They are often not found in the armies of the world because their chances of seeing combat duty are slim.

In light of the Iran election protests, it is obvious that Khamenei is concerned only with keeping his power and stopping at nothing to maintain it even if it means shooting his own unarmed people in the streets and disregard for human rights. It's also obvious to me that as a leader, he feels he can keep countries at a stand-off by his inhumane treatment of his own people.

As a world-wide community, many of us are alarmed that all we can do is sit here and watch this carnage against humanity. Please listen to the gunshots in this video as unarmed, unprotected men carry two young students, one of which is dead, off the streets of Tehran during the Iran uprising. You hear nothing but gunfire in this 2:41 minute video. Hopefully, someone will use scientific means to count how many shots are fired in this short time.

Additionally, besides gun power against unarmed men and women, a helicopter flew over protesters and spilled acid on them. All of these actions are a breach of the Geneva Conventions. Is it time for the international community to have force behind their words?

I remember in grade school that the bully had to be stopped by a bigger bully. It's just that simple. Read details about the 18 year old that dies in this video and tell me if you want to continue to see this kind of brutality continue. I don't know if this is the right answer but I do know that watching unarmed people shot, beaten and tortured is not something I support. What's the saying, "When good men do nothing, evil triumphs?"'

I end with this with a statement from an Iranian student: "Iran is not my country. "

What is transpiring in Iran is nothing less than an outrage! I am in awe of the Iranian people; they have more guts than most Americans to stand against a corrupt gov't knowing it can get them killed. Such is the desperation of a people with NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE!

Outrage over Iran election protests is an excellent piece! It is so sad that nothing can be done to help the Iranian people by the outside world without misinterpretation!
