OUTRAGEOUS

I am really ticked off. And I hope the more intelligent among my American readers will agree with me. Senator Debbie Stabenow, in the middle of trying to get herself re-elected, has come out with a TV ad telling the voters of Michigan how she came to Canada and put together a deal to keep Canadian trash out of Michigan landfills. Good for her, but what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Keep your trash out of Canada, Debbie.

Malcolm Watson, 35, is a teacher in Cheektowaga, Buffalo. Monday he pleaded guilty in court in to one count of sexual abuse and one count of endangering a child, charges that carry a maximum penalty of one year and 90 days jail, respectively. A felony sexual assault charge was dropped. It should be noted that there was a 15-year-old female victim and these actions took place inside a vehicle last summer, just 1,000 metres from the courthouse where Watson scurried out after his plea with his wife and friends. I wonder why he didn't want to comment on what he was doing in that car with an underage girl he taught English to at a highly thought of private school?

Cheektowaga town judge Thomas Kolbert actually gave the sex offender a choice - Canada or jail in New York state. Watson chose Canada. What kind of sick game is that? The deal was put forward by Watson (surprise) - a U.S. citizen who was aware he might not be allowed to cross back into the country where he's a landed immigrant. Apparently the judge agreed that being sent to Canada is just as bad, if not worse, than spending 1.4 years in a US jail. I don't think so. I don't think a US jail has a Tim Hortons, fine dining, shopping, gambling and all of the other amenities this area does. This whole issue is an insult to this country and a middle finger to what the judge thinks of us. Watson is to make routine visits to the U.S. to meet with a probation officer. Maybe he can stop off for some wings at the Anchor Bar in downtown Buffalo before heading back to his velvet prison called Canada?

(That's his picture, to the left. Does he look the least bit remorseful to you? His shit-eating grin tells you he just pulled off the coup of a lifetime)

Who has ever heard of anything like this? It has got to be unprecedented. One border patrol insider said there was little they could do legally to stop him. He has a residence in Ontario and that is where he was returning to. Eva, a 21-year-old woman growing up here, in St Catharines, said, "It brings all that back up for sure," referring to the kidnapping, rapes and cruel murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy and the so-called "manslaughter" of Tammy Homolka. "It seems a lot of people get away with stuff." This is what has happened with Watson. A free pass.

If Canada refuses to let him in and returns him, Cheektowaga court administrator Stephanie Lewandowski said the judge has ordered the man back into his court - where a decision on how his sentence should be completed will be made. Maybe Mexico can take him next?

Take your trash back, Debbie. It stinks.

This thing caused quite a hullaballoo over here (when was the last time you heard that word? lol) and even the PM got involved. Last I heard, the US DA is going back before the court to try to get the judge to change his mind, a Canadian lawyer has standing before the same court now to settle this, and Mr. Watson is getting the red carpet treatment over here. He had to walk out of the US court and face reporters, but over here they used decoy vans and got him out a back door of the motel he is staying in after reporters found out where he was. Go figure.

Robert, I agree that people should not have a choice between prison and army service. I wouldn't be able to trust them to cover my back. As for your point about the age of consent being 14 here, I offer the following, direct from the laws of the land:
The Criminal Code does not now criminalize consensual sexual activity with or between persons 14 or over, unless it takes place in a relationship of trust or dependency, in which case sexual activity with persons over 14 but under 18 can constitute an offence, notwithstanding their consent.
Section 153 now prohibits "sexual interference" or "invitation to sexual touching," in respect of a young person over 14 but under 18, where the accused is in a relationship of trust or authority towards the complainant or the complainant is in a relationship of dependency with the accused. Previous sexual experience and/or consent are no longer relevant where this special relationship exists. The maximum available penalty is five years' imprisonmen

Katie, thanks for writing. I especiallly got a kick out of your second comment. Don't worry about it. I also get so involved that my thoughts outpace my typing speed. I'm glad you liked the article though. Thanks again.

Seems bizarre. When I was drafted into the military in 1968 I met a number of others who were given a choice...join the military or go to jail. Equally bizarre in my opinion. The only thing I would like to point out is that if Watson were in Canada initially, he would not have been prosecuted as the age of consent there is 14!

By the way, great article - sorry, I got too wrapped up in my last comment to say so.

What kind of BS is that - Canada or prison??? The sick pervert should be in prison serving his time like all the other child predators. Canada doesn't want perverts any more than the U.S. does. This sicko got 'rewarded' for being a sicko. I wonder how many children he is going to violate now. This SOB now has reason to be a predator, he gets rewarded for it...UGH!
