Outside: The Legend

Donald Pennington

In the hushed speech of the old ones you sometimes hear of it, but it's not polite to discuss in front of the little ones. And while most believe it is nothing more than just a myth...a fairytale...a spooky story told to engage the imagination of little children, p.c. security frowns upon anyone engaging in dangerous, subversive conspiracy theories.

It is not politically sound to claim evidence of anything beyond the walls of these rooms. But social standing means nothing to me anymore. I believe I have a greater calling.

I know it's seems so impossible. Everyone on Facebook laughs at me and calls me a kook...a freak...a weirdo, when I talk of someday seeing the outside. My friends warn me that believing in such mythology will only lead me down a path of non-productivity, and that I "really should get back to chat." But I have seen the evidence contained in things called pictures.

Not pictures on my screen, but images printed on something called "paper." There are things out there which absolutely boggle the mind. Surely, there must be more to life than games, puzzles, and quizzes. If the outside really exists, I will find it.

You can think I'm crazy too. I no longer care! How can I take comfort in a high Bejeweled score, when I could possibly experience what the legends tell us humanity once called "sunlight?" Nothing short of seeing what trees might actually look like will ever compare to the vague descriptions given by the last of the old folks.

I hear there are even other people in the outside who are just like us, but walk upright. The old folks even tell me, at one time, everybody lived in the outside. It seems preposterous now, but I have to see for myself if any of it is true or not. If I succeed in my quest, I'll be afforded a whole new realm of living, and I'll come back for you all too, if I can.

If I fail, I may lose my Internet connection, and perhaps that is as it should be. For I am no longer satisfied with this bland existence. There must be more. I must try to go outside.

With that being said, this could well be my goodbye message. You may never hear from me again. If I don't make it back, please forgive me, my friends. Tell my mother I logged off of Facebook, because I had to follow my heart's yearning. If such is my fate, please speak kindly of me and my fool's errand, for I am compelled to discover this magical place called the outside. I hope to see you all again some day. Pray for me.

Hopefully it is now cooler outside, to explore the possibilities of your article!

But what will I do without e-mail...I might actually have to make auditory communication noises to do a thing called speaking.....and I'm not sure I'm up to that right now.

Why would you want to live where it's hot or cold, at the whim of forces outside your control, where you can't instantly find out what thoughts your thousand of Twitter and Facebook friends are having, where endless Youtube videos await your desire for continuous sensory stimulation (I dare not say entertainment nor education!)?

The outside really is just a myth. I must've just been having a bad dream, after all.

I love this!!! If/when you come back from the outside, imagine trying to explain it to your kids.

Having a garden forces me to go outside more and get some fresh air. It really is therapeutic. When I was a kid, you couldn't get me to stay inside. I ran around in my bare feet all day long in the summer. Those were the days. (Oh, and clever piece). :)
