There is a chill in the air, and when the sweaters come out, the thought of spinning circles on the ice is not a far distant thought. New Englanders need to make the best of the ice cold snowy winter's we're known to have. The best way to enjoy a winter in Massachusetts is by enjoying some of the great winter sports out there, such as ice skating or hockey.

Any Bostonian knows the joy of that first ice cold day that confirms the local lake is frozen enough to sink some sharp medal into, or the first sip of the hot chocolate that you can feel running all the way down to your toes. While people in the warmer states may not understand the enjoyment of being outside in 5 degree weather, they may not understand that getting your heart rate up and skating across the ice, actually warms you up pretty quick. The action of skating outside, even on a below freezing day is not as bad as it sounds. Lots of New Englanders live for this time for year!

Here are some of the top outdoor skating rinks in the Boston area:

Frog Pond- Frog Pond is one of the most well known outside skating rinks in Massachusetts. The rink is located in the center of Boston Commons. During the winter season while the rink is open, the area around the large Olympic size rink is surrounded by holiday lights and decorations, to really set the scene. With plenty of parking areas surrounding the commons, as well as the T, getting to the rink shouldn't be much of a problem. Admission is $4.00 per person and children under 13 are free. Skate rental is $8.00 and for children 13 and under, the fee is $5.00. There is a daily stack bar with a full menu and season passes are available. You can locate the Frog Pond right off of Charles Street, Boston, MA.

Kelly Outdoor Skating Rink - This outdoor rink is located at 1 Marburg Terrace in Jamaica Plain, MA. This rink is mostly used by the local residents, but there is a T-station located just 2 blocks away from this ice skating rink for the convince of those who are coming in from out of town. Once this ice is frozen, there is never a lack of skates using the ice.

Kendall Square Community Ice Rink - Kendall Square Community Ice Skating is a seasonal rink that opens's when the ground is frozen enough to be used safely. This rink offers skate rentals, a café, skating lessons, and well maintained smooth ice, which is hard to find in an outdoor rink. The rink is open from Noon -5:00PM Monday - Thursday, and Noon - (:00PM Friday, 11:00AM -9:00PM on Saturday, and 11:00AM - 6:00PM on Sunday and holidays. The admission for one day is $4.00 and a season pass is $70.00. Lunchtime season passes (from 12:00PM-3:00PM weekdays) are $50.00. For rentals, the fee is $5.00. Kendall square is located at 350 Kendall Street, Cambridge, MA.

Don't sit inside all winter and drown in bordem, put on a pair of skates and go enjoy the fresh air a cup of hot chocolate.
