Over My Head (Cable Car) by the Fray

R.A. Riter
The Fray's first hit single was Over My Head (Cable Car). The original title of this song was Cable Car. This was the first song released from The Fray's debut album How to Save a Life in 2005 in the United States. In the UK, this was the second song released, following the release of How to Save a Life.

This song was written by lead singer and songwriter Isaac Slade. The inspiration for this song comes from his relationship with his brother, Caleb, whom was nicknamed "Cable Car". Allegedly, the Slade brothers were not speaking for a while. This song was recorded as a demo when the band first began, but was soon picked up by a Denver radio station and became a very popular song in 2004 after a few months.

The song has generated over 1.3 million downloads, receiving a Platinum status. It was the fifth highest downloaded song in 2006. This song was featured on NOW 22. This song was also featured in movies and television. It appeared in the soundtrack for the movie Stealth. It could also be heard in a promotional for the television show What About Brian. The high amounts of success lead Epic Records to release the single in other countries, where there was not as much hype. Australia and New Zealand held this song in the top 30 charts, but it did not have the success like it did in the United States.

The music video, directed by Elliott Lester, was filmed on July 24, 2005. The two settings for this video were East High School in Denver, Colorado and in Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado. The video shows each band member as student in the school. Micah Slade, the youngest brother of Isaac Slade, played his brother's role.

This song fared very well on the Billboard Charts. Its highest position was eighth on the U.S. Billboard hot 100. It reached number two in the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks and fifteenth on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks. In 2006, it also reached as high as number eight on the U.S. Billboard Pop 100. It did not fare as well around the rest of the world, however. It reached as high as nineteenth on the UK Singles Chart, sixty-seventh on the Dutch Singles Chart, twenty-second on the Australian Charts, twenty-fifth on the Irish Charts, twenty-fifth on New Zealand Singles Chart, and eleventh on Canadian Charts.
