Over the Telephone

April Higney
A serenade of old love songs,
over the telephone, he plays for me to hear.
Apologies he whispers,
"I didn't mean to hurt you, never did,
never intended to make you fear."

"I would never place my hands upon you,
unless to hold you tight.
What are your demands?
I'll make it right."

"In all the time you've been away,
just your pillow beside my head,
and I know your love hasn't just disappeared,
or you'd already be in another's bed."

Okay, I've been too passive,
many times not saying a word,
its all out in the open,
every emotion carried out, you hadn't heard.

I've grown tired of being lonely,
spend more time with me.
Put more effort into your family,
it takes responsibility.
I am woman as well as a mother,
if you can't see that then set me free.

You have had a rough and tumble background,
and I'm not built that way,
the child between us deserves more,
and it all needs to change today.

I don't need to hear the words,
I don't need broken promises or secrets kept,
I need you to be upfront with me,
see I've grown up while you have slept.

A serenade of old love songs,
he plays over the telephone, for me to hear.
We take some time to talk, collect, and think.
I listen, quietly, calm words whisper upon my ear.
