Initially coke came under fire for the complexity of the codes and the high reward value of the prizes. Particularly some of the prizes were impossible to achieve due to the restriction of entering in a maximum of ten codes per day. Consumers argued that even if someone entered 10 high point value codes per day the contest would still end before reaching the required amount of points for the larger prizes. Coke reacted midway through 2007 by dropping some of the point values and making lower value prizes available. The rewards program was initially scheduled to end in 2008 but due to the slow startup of the website the rewards program has been extended through 2009 and possibly even further.
Coke points as they are commonly called are located on all coke products and the various products also carry a variety of point values. All bottles (2 liters, 1 liters, and 20oz.) have a point value of 3 coke points, where as 12 packs of coke products maintain a value of 10 coke points, and finally 24 packs of coke products have a redeeming code for 20 coke points. The average American consumes more than one 12oz. soda per day (healthlink.mcw.edu/article/973023516.html) which results in most people being able to cash in about 25 coke points per week without even trying to drink more than normal. This amounts to a possible 700 coke points without even trying to drink more soda than you normally do (throughout the rest of the year). However the majority of people participating in the coke rewards program are actively seeking out more points. Some merely asking their friends for their used soda caps, and others going to such drastic measures as to riffle through recycling bins for spare caps and codes.
Currently some of the more obtainable prizes include free rentals at blockbuster(2 free rentals, 2 20oz. coke products and a tub of popcorn 140 pts.),free tickets to AMC movie theatres (1 adult ticket 200 pts.), or a domino's Pizza night (1 medium pizza, 2 20oz. coke products 333pts.). These prizes can all be won with a little bit of extra work. For example the average household of four people could potentially earn about 40 points a week, and thus earn the blockbuster movie night in a little less than a month.
Overall you may be asking yourself if it is really worth your time and effort. The answer is "yes". The Coca-Cola company has made codes easier to read by creating a new cap for their bottles (which also requires less plastic and is more eco-friendly), Coke has updated the website for ease of use and ease of submitting codes, coke has also managed to continuously update the prizes available in order to always ensure happy consumers. So far this CP has redeemed coke points for over $100 worth of www.1800flowers.com gift certificates, several NFL fan items, a telescope (check out review for this exact telescope by clicking the link), and a Yoga mat, all won with the effort of about 10 minutes a day which just about anyone wastes surfing the web. So what are you waiting for? Start cashing in some coke points before the contest ends!
