Overcoming Writer's Block

Heather Wood
The most frustrating part of the writing process can be when the author is suddenly stricken with writer's block. You are in the midst of a good flow with your writing when all of a sudden you are stuck. If you are unable to continue on, there are exercises that you can perform to fix this problem. The following are things that you can do to overcome writer's block:

Write What You Know

If you find yourself stuck on a piece, take a break from it and begin writing something else. Basically, write anything. As long as you are writing, your creative process is not being halted. Once you begin writing again, even if it is not relevant to your current work, you will find the inspiration to continue on. Choose an easy topic to write on, something that you know a lot about. A common mistake that writers make is that they stop working altogether. Once you do this, it is much harder to pick writing up again.

Skip Around

Don't feel as though your piece has to be written in a linear progression. If you get stuck on one part, skip it and come back to it later. It's your decision on how you wish to write a piece. If you feel inspired about the ending, write that and then go back to the middle parts. It will eventually all come together.

Change Your Writing Mode

If you are writing on a computer, a possible cure for writer's block may be to begin handwriting your piece instead. The words may flow more quickly for you this way and you can always transfer the writing to your computer later on. This method will probably provide you with better writing since you can edit it as you transfer the work. Handwriting your piece gives you the chance to change your scenery as well. You can easily transfer a notebook and pen to the outdoors and find inspiration there.

Take a Walk

Leaving your work and taking a walk outside can help you overcome your writer's block. Walking alone gives you the opportunity to work out the problems that you are facing in your head. You can picture your piece and decide how you want the rest to play out. If it is a particular scene that you are stuck on, play out the different scenarios that can occur. You will be able to see the best way to resolve the scene. Then, when you return home, it will be easy to move on from where you left off.

Writer's block can be very frustrating, but it is important that you do not give up on your work. Many people find themselves with unfinished manuscripts or articles that could possibly be worth a lot of money if they were able to overcome this problem. If you dedicate yourself to your work, you will find that the words will come much easier and you will be able to finish your piece in no time.
