So why is it that nobody wants to address it? It's a simple answer. Because of how unpopular it would make any political party or Government that did. Nobody's going to win an election by addressing it as a main issue. The only effective answer to Overpopulation is to limit how many children are born each year and of course people being what we are there is the tendency to get all up in arms when 'Big Brother' tells us how to live our lives. But it's now coming to the point in countries like Africa and India where limitations are going to have to be made and this will of course lead to infringements upon human rights which is, what's the word.......tough!. What choice do we have, the price to pay by future generations is just too great and if we aren't prepared to do anything about it there may not be a future worth living for our kids/grand-kids. China of course is already implementing social change with a one-child policy, which grants economic advantages to those who agree to it. Unfortunately many people still cling to the idea of having 2 kids which shows we have to change attitudes as well.
So before we start reaching these militaristic doomsday scenarios let's start on a more rational plane with simpler less intrusive and common-sense solutions. Perhaps penalizing those who have more than say 2 children would be a start. Instead of rewarding people for having large families by throwing money at them how about rewarding those of us who don't have more than 2 children or better yet how about rewarding those who have no children at all. Financial incentives in the form of Tax breaks to those who aren't being a burden on society by adding to the population. In America things aren't quite so bad.........yet! but complacency is a dangerous thing. Limiting each family to 1 child sounds tough but with limitations on the environment it is going to have to be done eventually. People are hardly a precious commodity. I mean did you know that there's a rat for every person in New York City. Rather than being appalled by how many rats there are I'm appalled that there's a person for every rat.
When the Tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean a couple of years ago killing up to 300,000 people, sad to say but it didn't exactly make a dent in the world population. Giving incentives to people not to have children should take the place of giving incentives to have them. There will doubtless come a time when America too will have to tell people how many children they can have and enforcement of any such law although being totally un-American will eventually happen if people are allowed to breed unchecked.
I can envision the day when nothing short of a cull of sorts will be necessary to keep the human populace in check. 'How many kids do you have Mr. Thompson. Let me see, Three? Well that's just one too many. Say goodbye to Peter, Jr............Bang!' Of course this would be an unpleasant scenario but look at what's happening in China right now. We aren't too far from that scenario right now. Of course I'm sure the American Gov't would be more subtle. An invisible form of ethnic cleansing via race-specific biological warfare could be used to weed out those immigrants deemed undesirable. Enforced Vasectomies to anyone over 30. Perhaps Bacterial Warfare imitating the 'Black Death' of the 1600's might be developed. All unpleasant scenarios but all things I could quite easily imagine happening.
If we continue to allow people to have as many children as they like then we are completely doomed. This isn't in question. It's a fact. We are talking not just about Human survival but the planet's survival. In the next 40 years or so we could effect great changes in how we monitor and determine our populace but only if our respective governments have the guts to face the truth of the situation.

Post a CommentThank God I found people who think as I do, I'm particularly bothered by kids born into welfare families who cannot afford them. There should be a limit on how many babies they could have.
I do agree with your reasons, but mine was just further to support your point. Also I'm sure there are MANY different methods of population control being enforced... war, genocide, harmful chemicals in food. Of course most people see our unhealthiness as money in the pockets of pharmaceutical companies. While this is true, it is also true that they are trying to control our population. It's a win-win situation for them. I do what I can to be healthy. I hope it is enough.
They haven't addressed the issue of overpopulation because they don't want people to think about it. There are already measures being taken to control our population. I think what has been an accident has now been made intentional. Childhood obesity. Obesity causes an excess of estrogen, and in children this can greatly affect their reproductive organs. Most overweight women who are infertile have been obese even in childhood. While this is a relief for the strain on overpopulation, it is still very sad. There are children who are willing to be healthy but don't have the choice to because their parents are the ones shoving crap down their throats.
I fully and completely agree with this article. It is now 2009 (I see you wrote this in 2007) and the world population is now at 6.5 billion with estimates that it will be 9.5 billion by 2050. OMFG. PLEASE stop breeding people, PLEASE. The scary thing is that the government won't be able to tell people for exactlly the reasons you mentioned, so they will be better off to create a germ that will just do the culling for them.
i dont understand this website. i try to look up something and i get another. all i want is to find out what the government is doing to help immigration and overpopulation.
It's nice to see (some) people still get it! But we can't just blame the politicians for doing nothing here in the US.. Where are our wonderfully outspoken celebrities on this subject? Afraid their egomaniacal, breeding-crazy comrades might be offended if they say we've got take a serious look at population and consumption in the US and its impact on scarce resources and the environment? Doesn't Brad Pitt try to sell himself an environmentalist? Wouldn't it be great to hear him or Ben Affleck or how about musicians, comedians, talk show hosts - any or all of the illustrious outspoken democrats - speak up on the subject? I would love to hear one - JUST ONE - celebrity say, "Two's enough - we've already got too many inhabitants of this earth" when interviewed by some clueless anchor who asks, "Are you planning on having more kids?" And where on earth are our environmental organizations, our discovery channels, our colleges -- on this subject? This should be the number one issue
Sorry that got cut short, it should continue to say that the people who consume the least, maybe by conserving, reusing, and recycling, would pay the least. I think this is an economic policy that the environmentalists could get behind.
I don't think another government policy is the answer here. Why not let the free market work?
I very much agree with the points on the tax benefits of having children. However I am very, very sepitcal of government imposed solutions as they always take away individual freedom which is evil. I do believe the tax system needs a overhaul for many reasons and your article points out one of them. I believe the proposed fair tax on the congress floor right now would address this issue and many other environmental issues. To sum up briefly, the fair tax would get rid of the income tax completely and impose a national sales tax of 23% (some say it would be 30%). (To learn more please visit www.fairtax.org)
With the fair tax there would be no incentive for having children, in fact, the opposite would be true. The less you spend and consume, the less you pay in taxes(which everyone tries to do). I think people would think twice about having children knowing that diapers, clothes, food, etc have a 23% up charge. The bottom line is people who comsume the most, pay the most and the
It is no secret that genocide is being committed against citizens of Darfur and it seems the USA is still trying to control population of African/Americans by biased law enforcing practices, and gasp, appointing racists to Federal Election Commission to ensure fixing the vote. Hebrews and Christians, of course know that their God said: to be fruitfull, multiply and fill the earth. Hitler had his own methods to reduce "overpopulation". Proper management of earth's space and resources would do wonders for problems relating to too many humans on the face of the earth.
I have not heard that word: overpopulation since the 1960s. The words I hear a lot are: right to life, outlaw sex education, forbid birth control, get rid of Planned Parenthood and other places that provide information, on, duh, planning families and preventing unwanted pregnancies. I am also a bit aware that the USA is committing genocide on Iraqi citizens as well as, it seems, controlling the USA population by sending our youth off to war, not college.
