#1 Florida: The combined record of the teams Florida (4-0) has faced so far this year is 9-10, and two of those teams (Charleston Southern and Troy) don't even play in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). I know that Florida is a good team, but there's no way you can argue that they've shown that they are the number one team in the country so far this year. Their next game against #4 LSU should show whether they're real or whether they've been helped out by a lot of pre-season hype.
#2 Texas - Slightly better opponent's record than Florida (11-9), but again they haven't played any tough opponents yet.
#4 LSU - They've beaten a quality opponent (#18 Georgia), but a lot of their games have been dangerously close, and they easily could be 3-2 instead of 5-0, and that doesn't sound like a Top 5 team to me. #8 Cincinnati - Opponent record of 8-15, and they play in a relatively weak conference (the Big East). What Cincy has done to be ranked this high besides blow out a horrible team (Southeast Missouri State) is beyond me.
#10 TCU - TCU is another team that's played lowly opponents so far this year to get themselves to a 4-0 record. The only ranked team that's on the rest of their schedule is #18 BYU, so it's easy to see them only losing one or two games. I'm just not sure how much that actually says about TCU as a program.
#16 Kansas - Almost losing to Southern Miss doesn't exactly scream "premier football team" to me. Guess that's why I'm not an AP voter.
#17 Auburn - An opponent record of 9-14 and an extremely close win against 2-3 Tennessee apparently were enough to shoot Auburn all the way up to #17. They'll get a huge test in weeks 8 and 9, when they face #4 LSU and #20 Mississippi.
#24 Missouri - Almost losing to Bowling Green (1-4) and Nevada (1-3) was somehow enough to propel Missouri into the rankings after getting some time off this past weekend (their next game is Tuesday, against #21 Nebraska).
A lot of the teams listed have some tough opponents coming up, especially true of the teams in the Big 12 and the SEC. We'll see how many of these teams can prove that they deserve to be ranked as highly as they are and how many show that hype does not always bring performance.
