Thanks to Tiger Woods, and the Hot Shots Golf video game series, Golf is no longer seen as being a sport specifically for old men with pot bellies. Still waiting for Bowling to distance itself from that unfortunate(but true) stigma. It seems that one of the more rarer of all sports feats, just turns out to be one of the most embarrassingly overrated accomplishments in the Gentleman's Game.
A hole in one occurs when a golfer put's his/her ball in the hole with only one stroke on a par three. If you had the hulkish power to do such a thing on a par four, Then the hype around this would be a lot more justified. But you can't, so it isn't That's just how the world words I guess.
Is it not impressive when a pro golfer gets a hole in one in tournament, or even match play? Yes. Is it not fun to see them go for it at the Masters during the par three tournament? Sure it is. then what's your beef with the neigh impossible, long distance shot of absolute glory? Grandma can get a hole in one.
Seriously. The Elderly have made the hole in one their B.I. You've seen 80 and 90 year olds get on the SportsCenter Top 10 plays for getting a hole in one. you can see videos on Youtube. You probably know someone who has a grandma who totally pwned the local par three just recently.
Because of this geritol domination, a hole in one ends up looking significantly less sexy than it should. it's still good to have one on your score card. It'll surely help your chances of (duh)winning. But it's something a woman with an artificial hip can do. It's amazing that she can do it, and makes your accomplishment less much less interesting.
Would you walk into a bar with friends, and start bragging about getting a car up on two wheels in Grand Theft Auto 4? I'd hope not. Your stunt driver friend, Ricky "Fireball" Smith, can do it in the real would, with a '87 Buick! The degree of difficultly is substantially increased with his actually involvement, controlling the car from the inside. While with the video game, you sit on a couch and press buttons.
It's the same thing with a hole in one. It's a lot more impressive knowing that someone who isn't in the best shape of their lives, doesn't have a ton of muscle, and might have some vision problems on top of all of that, can get up and down with one grand swing. It's the nature of the beast.
Such a shot has alluded many who view themselves as being good, to "almost good enough to go pro". it's really not that big of a deal though. Fact is, not being a member of AARP means you shouldn't worry about it so much. The truly seasoned golfers seem to be a bit more lucky when it comes to sinking one from way out.
