Overrated Video Games Everyone but Me Seems to Love

Jennifer Amlie
There are some video games I've tried to play but just can't get into. Everyone else from friends to magazines and websites seem to love games I find overrated. It might be the gameplay, genre, or perhaps the games were over hyped that turned me off. Here's 5 popular video games I've tried to love but ended up disliking.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
I liked GTA III, Vice City, and absolutely love GTA IV. I just can't get into San Andreas. Reviewers love this game. On Metacritic, it has a 95%. My biggest problem is the tracking of skills. CJ needs to work out, eat, build muscles, and increase stamina. While this doesn't seem like much, I found this aspect of the game unnecessary and boring. When playing a game like GTA, I want to feel in the thick of the action, not needing to stop to pump iron or grab a sandwich. If you don't keep up with with CJ's training, he can't run fast, climb, or swim for very long. I was very glad to see the micro management of body mass gone from GTA IV.

Assassin's Creed
I found Assassin's Creed to be overrated. I was excited when reading great previews and reviews about the game. Then I got it and didn't see what the hype was about. The gameplay got repetitive after awhile. Gathering the information before you can do the assassinations isn't exciting and the formula never changes. The game seemed to require a lot of stealth and waiting. I'm not a big fan of stealth type games and I never felt engaged enough for the waiting to pay off. Assassin's Creed is generally well liked among other gamers and critics. It has a score of 81% on Metacritic.

Fable
I'm a big fan of RPG's, especially games were you can dictate if your character is good or evil. Fable seemed like the ultimate RPG. It was hyped up for years before it was released. When it finally did come out, it felt like a shorter version of what was promised. The main campaign is only 8 to 10 hours long. Of course, players could explore and find some side quests, but it wasn't enough for me. Also, I disappointed in the good or evil sections. I found that neither side had a big enough overall influence on your character. The story didn't feel very epic. It's also pretty easy to guess how the game will end way before it does. Fable is overrated to me, but Metacritic's score is 85%.

Madden NFL and any other yearly sports video game
I don't see why these games remain popular over so many years. The players and consoles change, but every year getting a new installment seems like a bit much. I just don't get the excitement of buying a yearly game that only offers a few new modes or tweaks. The video game sports genre have always seemed a bit overrated to me. In real life, I can't slay a monster or save the world, but I can play sports. Metacritic scores the Madden 10 at 86%.

Guitar Hero
I hate Guitar Hero. One Christmas, I purchased a Guitar Hero bundle for my son. We eagerly set everything up and took turns playing. By the end of the day, we didn't enjoyed the game or saw what the point was. All I found was pushing the right button at the right time gave you points. I don't see the excitement in that. Guitar Hero and the rest of the music video game genre has been over hyped, over saturated, and overrated. Everyone else seems to love Guitar Hero, though. Metacritic scores the first one at 91%.

Even though I played these video games, I never understood why they were so universally loved. They might not have lived up to my expectations or the media hype. Maybe I just can't get into the style or genre of certain games. There are video games I love and will play for years to come. Unfortunately, I found these 5 games overrated.

Oh goodness. I used to LOVE Fable 2. I played it every day. Then I started playing Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Can't play Fable any more. Once the story is done, the rest is just...eh.

If you had included Final Fantasy VII on this list, I think it would have matched my picks perfectly. As it is, I couldn't agree more.

I couldnt agree more on Guitar Hero! I purchased the bundle for my boyfriend for Christmas and we have only played it twice. I hated it! And I am really into music and he loves video games, so I thought it was a win win! Wrong! But, I do like watching him play GTA San Andreas.

I love "Guitar Hero"! I'd never play any of the other games you mention, though. ;)

Not played any of these. I fail to see why the crime games such as GTA are such a big hit, when it just makes teenagers think that it's like real life. For all too many it is too much like real life - gangs, drugs, killing and car theft. Something wrong somewhere... Make them play Farmville...

I'm actually with you on this!

LOL I have never known anyone to say a bad word about Guitar hero! Though actually if I had bad words to say it would only be because I suck at it!

Interesting. I'd say ppl like sports games cause its as close to the real thing as they're going it, and the more realistic or better they are at the game, the better.
