Oversaturation of K-pop Idol Groups

Aaron Tadeo
The K-pop industry has been booming considerably in the past few months. International promotions have become more often and various K-pop idol groups and South Korean personalities visit different countries not only to promote their work but also to promote South Korean culture. They devoted a lot of time and hard work to promote overseas, especially in neighboring Asian countries, and their popularity have grown immensely.

However, lately, I've noticed quite a lot of new idol groups that are debuting this year. This is a common story. In the past few years today's most popular and successful idol groups started in almost the same way. But will these new idol groups be able to succeed in a saturated industry? How will they affect the K-pop industry?

I've seen a lot of new idol groups on one of my favorite K-pop site, allkpop.com, such as male group Teen Top and 9-member female group Nine Muses. The latter is often compared to Girls Generation since they have the same members their looks and their probable concept are the same.

Aside from these new idol groups, there are also those who are making their comeback in the industry such as Shinee, Narsha (from Brown Eyed Girls) and more. And of course, since January of this year, a lot of veteran idol groups made their comebacks such as Girls Generation with Oh!, Wonder Girls with 2 Different Tears and Super Junior with Bonamana.

However, there's a possibility that it will affect sales since the fans could become divided when it comes to the group they will support. But of course, there are always fans that really support the industry by buying albums of different idol groups. It's also sad to think that it's a reality to see some rookie groups become unsuccessful in their promotions resulting in their disbanding and complete stoppage of promotions.

With the huge number of active and popular idol groups, it would be a bit difficult to enter the scene as a newbie. Unless of course, they make a new and interesting concept and be able to quickly establish their identity to the public. Also, they are quite susceptible to comparison with other groups. I'm pretty sure that a lot of fans will expect a lot more from these new idol groups.

On a much brighter side, this is actually a good avenue for other idol groups to spread their promotions outside South Korea. Some can promote internationally while some remain in South Korea to establish themselves locally. As a matter of fact, several idol groups have been very actively in international promotions lately.

These K-pop idol groups are really making an impact in the international music scene. This is evident with the number of fans that they have all throughout the world. They really haven't had a great impact yet on the western part of the world but with good promotions they could really become successful.
