Overview: "The Dark Knight"

Gary Picariello
In Gotham City - like the old saying goes - there's a new sheriff in town. He wears a dark mask. He's both judge and jury.

He's the Dark Knight.

One thing's for sure: this ain't the Batman your Dad grew up with.

That's a good thing too. Because after retooling Batman in 2005's Batman Begins , the Caped Crusader is even darker...more intense...even grimmer than before. Simply put: Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight brings Bat Man (aka Bruce Wayne) even closer to the edge of sanity.

With a stellar cast and a terrific score by Grammy award nominees Hans Zimmer and James Newton, The Dark Knight makes the super-hero genre as palatable as it could possibly be. This time out Batman goes mano-a-mano with his most evil foe: the dreaded Joker. And believe me -- any similarity between the Joker as played by Heath Ledger and the same character as depicted by Jack Nicholson or even Cesar Romero in Batman's previous incarnations is superficial at best.

Ledger gives us a Joker who makes you squirm. Long after you finish watching The Dark Knight, you're gonna wonder why you can't sleep at night and it'll be the face of the Joker that's keeping you awake.

The Dark Knight is a portrait in character studies. The entire cast from Batman Returns (minus Katie Holmes) is back. Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are all business as they try to re-invent Gotham City from the cesspool it once was. Their efforts stymied by the Joker who wants nothing more than to unmask Batman (Christian Bale) while at the same time turning Gotham City into an even darker shade of black.

Dark Knight star Christian Bale makes donning Batman's black cowl as natural as you or I dressing for work in the morning.

Icing on the cake: Grammy award nominees -- composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard - are also now eligible for Academy Award consideration.

Heh heh, I shamefully admit to having missed this film in theater (was totally broke after a huge med bill in summer), but I sure am looking forward for its arrival on HBO in a (perhaps more than) a few months indeed. Thanks for the reminder, bro! :o)

Excellent overview, Gary. I am a big fan of Christian Bale as Batman and greatly enjoyed Ledger's portrayal of the Joker. It will be interesting to see what aspects of the stories and villains Nolan decides to flesh out in the third installment. I hope to see Harvey Dent's altar ego of Two-Face come into play a bit more. Great write up!

I saw this movie but found the Batman portrayed here to be a bit one-dimensional. Thanks for the review!
