Owl Pellet Lesson Plans for Children

Owl pellets are very interesting things to talk to your students about. They may not even know what these are. Here are some great activities to teach your students all about owl pellets. You can incorporate some of these activities into your lesson plans.

Before doing any activities explain to your students what owl pellets are. Tell them that when an owl eats a mouse they cannot digest the bones in this creature. So they regurgitate it out of their mouth. This thing that comes out of their mouth is what we call an owl pellet.

A great activity about owl pellets is to have your students dissect an owl pellet. Split your students up into small groups. Give each group an owl pellet to dissect. Then give your students a small dissecting knife and some tweezers. Have them cut open the owl pellet to look at what is inside. Have them use the tweezers to get the tiny bones out of the owl pellet. Have them look at the bones to determine which kind of mice bone it was. For example was it a leg bone or a arm bone.

A great game dealing with owl pellets is called collect the owl pellets. Before class starts cut out owl pellet shapes out of construction paper. When your students get to class take them outside. Place the owl pellets at a distance from your students, scattered on the ground. Then when you yell go they must run to the owl pellets ( the cut out construction paper ones) and pick up as many as they can. When all the owl pellets have been picked up have your students count how many they picked up. The student with the most owl pellets wins! They get to scatter the owl pellets back on the ground for the next game.

Another great activity is to observe some owls. Take your students to your local nature center that houses owls. Have them observe the owls and maybe they will see a owl regurgitate a owl pellet. Have a person that works at the nature center talk about the kind of owls they have there. Have him or her tell your students what kind of care they give to the owls in their nature center. Then have your students ask any questions that they have.

By incorporating these activities into your lesson plans your students will have a lot of fun. They will learn a lot about owl pellets while playing fun owl pellet games and doing great owl pellet activities. So the next time you have a unit on owl pellets or just a day on owl pellets try out some of these great activities.
