Own a Vintage Motorcycle

Chad R. Herman

A motorcycle is a motorcycle right?Absolutely wrong! These words are said, uttered, and spoken by people who do not know motorcycles, and those who don't know the history of these fascinating motorized bikes. When people start talking about bikes various manufacturers begin to spout their claims of superiority. One says they are better racers, another says it's a better cruiser. Another says they are American, then another states their speed records. The mud begins to be slung back and forth and suddenly you feel like you're watching late night commercials. But, when a vintage motorcycle drives by, everyone hushes. Everyone understands without being told that this piece of machinery is better than what is being argued about. This piece of machinery is old enough, and has withstood the test of time to be seen as a classic.

When you pull up with a new chopper, people take notice. When you pull up in a tricked out custom chopper, people swarm around you. When a person rolls up with a vintage motorcycle, people stand up and want to meet you. A vintage motor cycle not only shows off it's own beauty, but also the ability behind the company that made it when the company was in a different time, a different, era, and the machine speaks to that. A vintage motorcycle is from a bygone era, a time that we as a people will never have again. When a person watches a cleaned up old motorcycle, it's as if a picture from your childhood came roared to life in full exhaust shuttering awe.

However, for all of those out there who are thinking of getting into a vintage bike, no matter who has made it, there are a lot of things to think about. You have to know what you're doing, since often times this bike can no longer be serviced by a general mechanic. If you need a part, you're going to have to do a lot of research to find the right pieces, threads, and even something that looks right for that bike. Not only that, you're going to start with a bike that is far less than perfect, and you will have to build, tinker, and restore it too its former self. In essence, you have to remind the bike who it is.. This makes these motorcycles even more awe inspiring. To know that this collector has chased down the right pieces, learned the right tricks, and spoke to just the right people to tune this beautiful bike up to the standards of the original manufacturer when it rolled off the line. You're looking at an old bike that has an owner that believes it's as special as everyone looking at it does. These motorcycles are labors of love, and they are a joy to see.

So if you're ready to start the project-Do it!
