Owner's of Pit Bulls: Don't Trust the Media

Kevin Smith
A loving pit bull dog owner despises their pets' reputation. It's almost like pit bull dogs are the criminal breed of dogs. The only time you see them being broadcast is when someone gets attacked, when they're being thrown into the pound for doing something wrong, when they're being rescued, or recovering from devastation and neglect. It's not fair that when a dog that is not a pit bull attacks a human, news reporters fail to announce that dogs breed.

Pit bulls are loving animals on the inside, still it's what they are capable of that people fear. A dogs behavior is usually a reflection of its owner's treatment and training or the lack of. The most important thing any dog owner should know is that there is no way they can be 100% confident in their animals behavior if they do not train them properly. There is no way they can be sure how their dog will act in public if they do not socialize them with people as well as other animals. The lack of good training and regular socialization is usually the difference between a mean dog and a goofy dog that loves others. People who train their dogs to be vicious, do it for various reasons, not just to fight with other dogs, but also to be good guard dogs.

Thanks to the negative media coverage pit bulls receive, almost everyone who does not actually own or know someone who does own a pit bull is afraid of them. On one hand it's comedy and on the other it's scary. Any pit bull owner who has had their dog approach a random person has seen the fear that people have inside, as the results of a pit bull getting close to them. At the same time that we know that our pit bull would not harm anyone, we have to worry about some pit bull hater making a big deal about our dog being loose or some other excuse to try getting us in trouble with the law. To me, pit bulls are treated today like African-American males were treated in the early '90s. People fear what they are capable of and for that reason will find any excuse they can to get the authorities on them or "off the streets" per se.

Some people may read this and think to themselves that that's not true, but it is very true, and sad at the same time. In my lifetime I've had more Chihuahuas snap at me and act like they want to attack than any bully breed of dog. How come the feisty Chihuahua breed never get any negative media coverage? Obviously because of their size and because they can't lock their jaws. It's because they physically aren't capable of what a pit bull is capable of. Well what about breeds like the Rottweiler? The Rottweiler has many similar capabilities compared to the pit bull just not quite as a vicious. All in all, the point I'm trying to make is that pit bulls are just like all other dogs. They love people, they are loyal, and they make wonderful pets. So before people just pass them off as being vicious killer animals, they need to read up on their history or even better become friends with one, and I guarantee their perception of pit bulls will change.
